Not a cloud in the sky and quite warm. Hiked to Submarine Rock, then followed the jeep road to Chicken Point, then back on the trail. I was glad that the trail was separated far enough from the jeep road so it did not seem too intrusive. Except of course at Submarine Rock and other destinations where the crowds disembarked.

Not so windy today. Actually quite warm and uneventful. However, it was good to escape the crowds and stretch my legs. Walking around these giant monuments did something to my sense of proportion and made me feel very small!

Much preferred the quietness, friendliness and privacy of this campground, and would recommend it to all who have tents. The walk itself is pretty nice. When I got to the point where I could see the road I bushwhacked back, following my GPS. Otherwise everything is pretty much as already described.

Did this late in the day, arriving at the bottom about 6PM. It was cool and quiet, with only one other couple there. As I arrived a squall line went through. The temperature dropped and it started blowing and raining but 5 minutes later was sunny again.

There is nothing like being almost the only one down there, looking up at the ruins, with goose bumps on your arms. Fantastic!

When I was home in Massachusetts planning this trip I was hoping it would not be too hot, but when I arrived at the trail head that did not seem to be a problem. There was fresh patches of snow on the ground, the sky was very dark, and it was hailing and blowing. I wondered if I should venture out on this loop by myself. Then it seemed to clear off so I dropped my $5 fee into the very prominent box and felt committed. As I was lacing up my boots the hail started up again and I heard thunder. I watched the amazing weather from the wonderful vista. As the thunder did not seem to be getting closer I decided to go for it.

My blue jeans became completely soaked on the way down, not so much from the continuing hail but from brushing against the heavy leaves that hung over the trail. I knew the best thing to do was to keep going. I reached the low point and as I ascended the first ridge it was very windy. Then I seemed to be protected by the mountain and the weather on this side was almost sunny.

The ascent seemed to be fairly quick and once I reached the flat top I turned a corner and was lucky enough to see a bear! The rest of the hike was uneventful. The forest was quite pretty with the patches of snow and the launching pad for the hang gliders quite amazing. When I got back to the car I drove to the campground. It was cold, windy and deserted. I decided to head to the campground in Dead Horse State Park instead, where it was sunny and warm. Good decision, and a fun adventure!

Hiked various trails until I eventually reached the Peavine Trail, then came back a slightly different way. Hiked probably about 4 miles along the various paths. Along the way it started raining and blowing, which was ok, as it seemed to keep everyone else off the trail. Did not see anyone else except at the very beginning. Fantastic rock formations!

I am another fan of site number 4 in Lower Wolf Creek Campground! This was the best campground and site I had in my two week trip to Arizona. It was very quiet midweek so that I had the whole loop to myself for the three night I spent there.

The hike itself is pretty much as described. The fire tower was closed and I passed one other hiker on the wooded ridge. Windy and cool on top but nice temp for hiking!

I thought this was going to be a short hike but it turned longer. In my low clearance rental car I could only drive about two miles in, which put me about three-quarters of a mile from the green gate. It was a cool day, however, so I did not mind the walk along the jeep road through the chaparral. The walk continued to become more interesting as I went along. I went as far as some GPS coordinates I had for the springs. The trail seemed to continue on but I had lunch and then turned around. This was a very quiet area so I was surprised when I met another couple hiking. The hike seemed pretty nice but I would not call it exceptional.

Started at Brin Mesa East. Hiked the Cibola - Soldiers Pass - Brin Mesa Loop and would highly recommend it. Thanks for the great trail descriptions!

Just thought I'd mention that a Red Rocks pass is not required for this area, which is a good thing if you are coming from the south as there seems to be no place to purchase one. Also, the trail was easily accessible by my rental car. I hiked this on a nice cool afternoon, with clouds, thunder, finally a shower, but no lightning. No one else down there but one other solitary hiker.

Since no one has written anything, I will write a few words about Big Wash Road, the campgounds, and the hike.

After leaving the highway, Big Wash Road follows the valley floor for a few miles before beginning a steady ascent. It then levels off at mile 9, where it crosses a saddle at Packsaddle Campground. This is a small campground amongst stunted trees, directly adjacent to the road, with 3 or 4 sites and a toilet. Big Wash Road then follows the contours of the land, more or less, for about 3 miles to the trailhead. Windy Point Campgound is about halfway between the prevoius campground and the trailhead. It is about a quarter of a mile off Big Wash Road, and has 8 or 9 sites and a toilet. Many of the sites are not only wonderfully placed amongst the rocks, but have spectacularly views for miles and miles to the north and west. There is no water at either campgound, but at $4 per night is a great bargain. I spent a wonderful night here to get an early start on the hike and highly recommend it. I was also able to drive everywhere I needed, without difficulty, in a low clearance, compact rental car.

The hike itself is pretty much as described. Cherum Peak is the highest point around and views are fabulous in all directions. Much of the trail is exposed and views are also good most of the time. The trail was easy to follow and the junctions with the jeep trail are well marked. My GPS showed a total climb of about 1000 feet, while I conservatively estimate the total distance to be 5.6 miles. In any case it took me, and most who signed the logbook, about 4 hours roundtrip. I did this at the end of September and it was a little hot, though not uncomfortably. For me it was areally great adventure, in a little used area, as I saw no one the whole time til I had almost returned to the paved road.
