I spent quite a bit of time here but still didn't see everything. I thought the most interesting bit was the ability to compare plants from the various deserts. It seemed like there were a good number of people there, based on the cars in the parking lot, but the paths weren't a bit crowded. I'm interested in going back next time I'm in AZ to check out the S. African section (hopefully it'll be open then).

Took me awhile to locate the trailhead for this one. The location given in the full hike description is accurate, but the description in the brief summary is out of date (and unfortunately, I only had the brief summary with me). It says "Shortly past the ADOT yard, highway 288 (now dirt) will make a 180 degree turn to the left (there is a small green sign that says Parker Creek). Just past this sharp turn, the highway will curve right. As soon as you enter the right curve, there will be a short road (I think it is marked with a trailhead sign) taking off uphill to your right. The parking area is just a couple hundred feet down this road."

In reality, 288 is paved now, and the trailhead is before the 180 degree left turn, not after. If you go past the 180 turn and take a right, you'll end up at the gated off driveway to the now-closed Sierra Ancha Experiment Station Office. Turn around and go back in the other direction. There's a trailhead sign marking the turnoff, but it's hard to see until you're almost on top of it, and I totally missed it until I came from the opposite direction. The trailhead is on the east side of the road, not more than 40-50 feet off the highway.

Anyway, this was a really nice hike, at least the bit that I did. I was really looking for some fall colors, but was about a week late. Still had a good time, and turned around after going a mile or so. I dropped down into the dry creekbed for the return hike and that slowed me down quite a bit. Ran into a couple of bowhunters who had seen nothing, but did assure me that the views from further up the trail were incredible. I'll have to go back next time I'm in state and do it again.

Nice trail, but not spectacular. It looks like there are a lot more dead and downed trees now than when it was first written up, especially in the upper section. I noticed a drastic difference in comparing a couple of my photos to Joe's photos from '01. The confusing trail junction he describes, with 4-5 trails splitting off, was pretty easy to figure out. There now only seems to be two options: go up Drew to the Rim, or continue on the Highline. Not sure what happened with the other trails. The gate and much of the fence is gone too, as is most of the signage at the junction (compare my 5th photo to Joe's 10th/11th). The top section seems to have lost a fair amount of trees too - the 2 upright posts in the lower center of my 6th photo correspond to the same posts in Joe's 19th photo. Much more open now than back then. Still, all in all a good hike with very few people on it that day. The middle section was nice - would be great with the colors still on the trees instead of on the ground. :)

Followed the trail along the creek most of the way up, then stayed on the main trail back to the trailhead. Only saw 6 other people, most of them on my way back. Was about a week too late to catch the colors still on the trees, but I got to see lots of leaves on the ground. :? Still a nice hike with lots of mini-waterfalls to photograph.

Bypassed the loop around the lake in favor of following the outflow stream for awhile. Very quiet and peaceful down there. Looked like it'd be a great place to spot wildlife around dusk.

Cool little trail, very easy and uncrowded. Neat rock/lava formations. It was a good way to get out and stretch a bit after hiking out of the Grand Canyon earlier that day.

Hiked from CBG to CIG in about 3 hours, not including time spent meandering off-trail slightly to get some photos of a waterfall. The last mile seemed to take all day - felt like Indian Garden was right around the next corner for an hour or so. Camped overnight, then got up early and made it to the S. Rim in 4 hours, for a total of 7 hours hiking. Trail was in pretty good shape. There was some maintenance work being done on a section near the top, and overall the steps, etc. were in much better shape than the S. Kaibab. No problems keeping a steady pace, no leftover soreness from the hike down, and overall a nice trip up to the rim. Had a feast at Maswik when I was done, and then rolled myself out to the car and headed south. :( I was glad to be done with the hike, but really didn't want it to be over - can't wait to go back and do it again.

Hiked out, caught sunset at Plateau Point. Very nice views, a bit too many people and commotion to really enjoy the moment though. Had a good time watching the mice come out before dark looking for left over scraps.

Awesome side trip off the N. Kaibab trail - not another person in there. I'm sure most people walk right past it to get to Ribbon Falls. Just guessing at the total distance into the canyon. I stopped when the brush started getting pretty thick. The big waterfall (actually set of 3 waterfalls) is not too far in. The canyon can flash flood (2 people died there in '97) so if there's any chance of rain on the N. Rim or Inner Canyon check with rangers ahead of time.

My first hike into the Grand Canyon. I hiked S. Kaibab and spent 2 nights at CBG. The Black Bridge was closed to hikers for some maintenance work, so I bumped up the one-way mileage a touch because of the little bit of extra walking to the Silver Bridge. Awesome hike - I thought the first few miles were easily the worst, and it got easier after that. Perfect weather, with a high of maybe 75-80 at the bottom. Can't wait to go back and spend more time down there.

Went a little ways past Siphon Draw. I wasn't intending to go all the way to Flatiron, but wanted to see what it was like for future trips. Saw lots of lizards :D and spent a bit of time looking for the route :? .

Nice easy hike, nothing spectacular unless you love distant views of the Phoenix skyline. :?

Added in a little side-trip through Hidden Valley. Not many wildflowers along the way because of the dry winter, but still a great hike with awesome sunset views.

Only went to Bull Pasture. Even though the cloudy weather didn't make for great scenery, I still spent lots of time taking photos (no, it usually doesn't take me 4.5 to hike 4 miles :? ).
