| no partners | | Decided to do a last minute backpacking trip with my nephew. Reached the trail head at 6PM Friday night and hiked in 4 miles to a campsite partly down the mountain. It was a great night, the moon was very bright, casting shadows from the trees. Woke up the next morning at 6AM. had breakfast and started hiking at 7AM, reached the fall at 8:30. Fall was running well, we hung around for about 40 minutes and started back. Unfortunately this is my second mis-adventure on this hike. Last year I hiked up the wrong creek (Lime Mountain Spring/Maple Spring not sure the correct name (the one you cross on the trail)) and this year, I missed the trail coming back and hiked an extra mile down creek and had to reverse our direction and head back and kept to the right to find the trail. We kept to the right so much that we ended up following the spring (mentioned above) back to where it crosses the trail. I realize that was the spring after a while, but figured we'd just follow it up to the trail crossing and explore that creek seems how we'd already been hiking in a creek on rocks and boulders for over 2 hours. We ran into tough_boots and his hiking partner at the crossing as we were filtering water for the climb back out and told them to not make the mistake we did of missing the trail (still not sure how we missed it) From there we headed up the hill, grabbed our packs and a bite to eat and arrived at the parking lot at 2:15 for the drive home. This is two years in a row going in February after rain and both times have been great despite the extra exploration. I'm becoming very familiar with the Maple spring now that I've hiked it up last year and down this year. I think I'll go again next year just to get it right and do the hike to the falls and back. My nephew's gps read 6.5 from the parking lot to the falls and our total trip showed 15. Yes, he had a gps and we still got lost. It's a small one for running, but nonetheless would have helped had we referred to it earlier when we missed the trail instead of barreling ahead thinking it was further down. We also saw 5 whitetails, one on the hike in at night and 4 the next morning (at least one buck). |
