Trail was a bit icy, snow pretty well packed down in most places. Microspikes were very helpful. Beautiful Fall day hiking.

Beautiful now with Aspens starting to peak and a nice dusting of snow on surroundings peaks. A little icy and slushy in places, but nothing requiring technical gear.

Shavano and Tabeguache, great area! Racing the weather- got a few sprinkles, and light hail, but below treeline before lightning started.

Wildflowers are past their peak in spots, but abundant and beautiful. Trail is mucky near the beginning, but otherwise in great condition.

Very quiet area, a few inches of snow still on the ground in most areas- one set of human prints for about a mile on the trail, then just wildlife tracks.

Beautiful cool day. Everything is green, pools of water are still a common sight. Lots of birds of every sort- and the summer crew of students studying them. Great area for exploring, and I'm sure that the fall colors are amazing.

Wow, this is one of my favorite hikes that I've done in AZ. Huge green meadows, beautiful pines/aspens/spruce/fir, cool temps, lots of wildlife, and very quiet- only a handful of people anywhere in the area. There were still several good patches of snow, and the temps were perfect in the 60's during the day and high 40's overnight. I drove up the day before, and made a little detour to camp out at Crazy Jug Point- phenomenal views, great area. From that campsite to the TH is about a 16 mile drive. The trail is almost completely flat, making for very comfortable backpacking, and there are great campsites everywhere, depending on how far you want to go. Some of the prettiest areas are in the middle of the trail- looking at the maps, another great trip would be a loop from trail 121, through the Pratt Canyon section, and out via trail 122 for about a 12 mile trek. You would need to hike about 2.5 miles on FR22, but would give you a good feel for the area and make a nice daytrip. Even the drive in from 89A at Vermilion Cliffs/Paria Canyon Wilderness and through the forest roads from Jacob Lake is beautiful, with tons of wildlife. During the trip I saw a grey fox, coyote, several gopher snakes, about 50 mule deer, a flock of wild turkeys, and countless squirrels, chipmunks, and various birds. There aren't a lot of water sources in the area- Castle Springs across the FR from the TH, and Riggs Spring about 1.5 miles in are about it. There's a stock tank- labeled Lookout Canyon Tank at about mile 9, but you would have to be pretty desperate at that point. This is a beautiful area worth exploring, especially if you have some time while visiting the North Rim.
