We took a mid-day hike and it was a great day for it!
There was a moderate number of people on the trail, but it could have been much worse.
Found a small beach by the end of the trail to relax.
The only trash issues were by the beginning and at the end. We even saw a couple of people collecting trash (yea!!)

My son, two of his friends, my brother-in-law and myself did a two-nighter on the Bell Trail. Of course, we only went to the are known as "The Crack" and camped downstream from there.
The weather was great, a little rainy on Saturday, but nice and cool. I guess the cool weather kept the boom-box/cooler-dragger crowd to a minimum. We saw relatively few people down in this popular spot. The water in Wet Beaver Creek was crystal clear and still fairly cold. The only notable wildlife we ran into was a hungry ring-tailed cat who tried to raid our camp at night. It almost chewed through one tent to get some granola stored in a side pocket. On Sunday after it warmed up some, the no-see-ums were out in force. Time for the extra strength DEET!
This is a place I could recommend for most anyone, especially on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Bring plenty of water for the trail when it's hot!

My son, our two dogs and I did this trip as an overnighter (been a year or three since I've had the backpack on). As usual, we were overloaded and out of shape (me). But that was the idea. to take an easy trek to figure out what needs to be left home on the next trip.....
It was beautiful out with many, many blue and violet flowers in bloom. We saw one very healthy Diamondback where the trail tops out on Black Mesa. He looked very content, catching some rays. We camped in the Boulder Basin area. Boulder Creek was dry right where the trail crossed, but we found flowing water a little further downstream. With the weather front moving through, it was a little chilly at night. Sunday was a bit chilly, but it made for great hiking weather. Got out before it rained much, but it looked as though the high ridges were getting some weather.
A great trip.

Beautiful hike, pretty crowded by the trailhead, but thinned out a lot by late afternoon, especially by the petroglyphs. Quite a bit of water in the first big pool. A lot a baby(?) tarantulas cruising around the area near the pool. A lot of the brittle bush and salt bush is greening up very nicely, no doubt due to the recent snow.

Took the Slate trail for leisurely New Years Day hike. Not as many people out as expected, except for horse riders. Beautiful day out of the Phoenix smog!!

Thought it might be the last "cool" weekend of the year, so me and the pooch (Rosa) decided to have a go on the loop trail combining Ford Canyon, Willow and Mesquite Canyon trails. It had been at least 15 years since I'd been on the Ford Canyon trial. I'd forgotten how it turns into a real "goat" trail when you get into the tanks. I really think this is the best trail in the White Tanks (way too many people at the waterfall). Other than a few people by the trailhead, all we saw was one gal jogging in her bikini (wow!) and a small group at the bottom of the tanks. We got about a 1/2 mile past the old dam and then I realized I had lost Rosa's leash, so we went back out the same way (found the leash!!) Awesome hike!!!

Took Rosa (my dog) and did a nice little loop on the Go John Trail at Cave Creek County Park. couldn't have asked for a nicer day, starting to get warm. Saw quite a few people by the trailhead, but once on the backside, only a couple of people on horseback, plus some cute gal who was on her second time around. (She just said "It's such a nice day!") Meanwhile me and the dog rolled our tongues back in our mouths and kept on going.
Things are definitely greening up out there, especially with the warmth. Maybe we'll be lucky and spring will roll directly into the monsoon ( and if pigs could fly...........)

We did this hike on Sunday, 3/19/06. Apparently because of the rain and chill, the entire park was almost deserted. We had the trail all to ourselves. Even though it was chilly, we just had a slight sprinkle while we were there. It was beautiful. The morning rain had "cleaned" all of the rocks and you could easily see why there was so much interest by early prospectors in this area. We hiked the loop which comes back on the Go-John trail. It was a great way to spend a drizzly day!!

Rosa (my dog) and I hiked this trail on a beautiful day last Sunday. Due to the recent rains, all of the Brittle Bush and Salt Bush were greeing up very nicely. If it doesn't get too hot too soon, it should make for a spectacular flower display in a few weeks. (A little more rain will certainly help!)
There were a few people on the trail and even fewer bike riders.
Turned out to be a great hike!!

It had been close to 25 years since I've walked into this area. After hearing that the trailhead had been closed for a number of years, it was truely wonderful to see the nice trailhead there now.
My wife (recovering from a stroke and knee operations) and I only walked about 2/3 of the way in, but it's still truely beautiful there. (we sure could use some rain!!!) We saw a number of people hiking, but it wasn't too crowded.

I decided to try going down in this area. It had been 15 or 20 years since I'd been down in Cottonwood Camp. When we got there, we immediately had someone dressed in full Army combat gear come over to our vehicle. Having wild thoughts of walking into some sort of weird military exercise, the guy was very friendly and said they were playing a version of paintball, except with low velocity BB guns (that way they don't leave the area all painted up). With the old buildings at Cottonwood Camp looking like some sort of bombed out area, this looked like a good place for them. So we proceeded on down the wash. While we didn't have to do any major bushwacking, the sand was very soft in many places which made for slow and tiring walking. Once we got out of the immediate "war zone" the are was surprisingly peaceful. We didn't even see that many ATV's running around. About 2/3 of the way down, we did see one of the largest Saguaros I've seen in many years. It must have had more than a dozen arms. The turn into Cane Spring Canyon was easy to find. The most amazing thing was to see running water, even after 80+ days with no rain. No large pools, but the water was clear and ran openly for 50-100'. Definitely a beautiful spot.

It's been 5 years since I've done this hike. As usual, I forgotten just how merciless this trial is. We got off to a late start (7:30 AM) do to some logistical problems. As always the views were beyond belief. Some parts of the trail were very recently rebuilt and in excellent shape, other stretches, especially the final knee killer switchbacks just before Black Bridge, had quite a bit of recent rain damage. We were going down the S. Kaibab and up the Bright Angel (2 nights a the river and one at Indian Gardens). Temps were very nice at the top, at the river was warm, 95 to 100. The campground was not terribly crowded and we even ran across a friendly(?) little rattler right next to camp. Overall a great trip, even though I don't even want to talk about how long it took to go from Indian Gardens to the Rim!!
