| no partners | | I like to be the first finder with a geocache at least once a month. It's early March and there is a new geocache along Castle Creek, so there I went. With all the rain and snow in the Bradshaws, I figured it would be a good excuse to walk instead of drive. Normally I'd park near the junction of Bumble Bee Rd & FR684. Instead, I parked about 1.25 miles south just off Bumble Bee Rd, where there is an unnamed road that goes to FR684.
After about a mile in, I reached Black Canyon Creek. It was running pretty strong. I stopped and changed into a pair of sandals and got out my hiking sticks to help with the ford. The water was up to my hips at the deepest part and the current was pretty strong. I had to lean into it otherwise I would be pushed downstream. Once across, I put my shoes back on and put the poles away.
Not long after, I reached FR684 and followed it down to Castle Creek. When I reached the creek, I took my shoes off and waded across, then put them back on. Shortly after, I had to cross the creek again. I decided it would be a pain to try to keep my shoes dry, so I just sloshed across from then on.
At about 3.25 miles out, I reached the geocache and found it quickly. It was on a promontory just off the road with great views of Castle Creek and the surrounding hills.
I wanted to walk at least ten miles, so I continued following 684 until a bit past East Boulder Creek at Castle Creek. My GPS said I'd gone a bit over 5 miles and I felt I had crossed the creek enough times already. Unbeknownst to me, that would have been the last crossing. Oh Schucks.
I stopped and drank my Gatorade and emptied some of the sand in my shoes, then headed back.
I crossed one gate on the way out, and on the way back, there was a horse near it. The horse was alone, which seemed strange.
When I crossed Black Canyon Creek on the way back, I just pulled my poles out; there was no reason to put the sandals on. I was a bit worried the creek would be running higher since it was afternoon, but I didn't notice any change. |
