Started from the I-17 freeway side of the canyon going downhill first. The first 1/3 mile or so requires some bushwhacking, but other than that this is an easy hike with a mountain bike trail available all the way after that first part. Passed about 4 groups of boulderers since this is a pretty popular area for climbing. It's always unbelievably green in here, and lots of fern growth along the various tributaries. This is a nice relaxing easy canyon hike

We ended up going along the AZT a little extra distance to check out Lost Tank south of Vail Lake. Not much to see there, it's a little pond. The short section on the AZT where you are walking along the edge of the Anderson Mesa rim is really nice and offers great views of Lake Mary and Mormon Mtn. Lots of various birds flying around the 2 lakes, and one very bold small one that landed 5 feet from my dog and then chirped loudly at the dog and then ran away very quickly. Last year when I did this in August then were several dozen cows and many bulls up here as well. The bulls did not appreciate our presence and they let us know about it. No cows at all on this trip up there though

Saw Joe at the .25 mi mark on the first one as he was finishing up and chatted with him for a moment. Breeze up near the top felt really nice today

Made great time today and paced it well. Heard and saw a small rattler in the bushes right by the trail at about the halfway point on 1st lap so I warned those with dogs coming up the trail

5 star hike, this was outstanding. This trail approaches Mount Elden from the North starting at Schultz Pass, follows the ridgeline of Elden, and eventually connects to the Elden Lookout Trail. Begins in some of the most densely forested sections of trail I've seen, then switchbacks up this really nice area with huge boulders around you where it meets the Heart Tr, then comes the ridgeline part where you have a completely toasted section down below to the east, but densely forested slope to your west. Before connecting with Elden Lookout Tr, you have to go drop down to an exposed area and I was almost knocked sideways off my feet from how powerful the wind gusts were here. Final mile or so passes through lots of Aspen and then you're at the turnoff for the tower

I needed to check out the Kendrick Pk Trail for the HAZ event, so after making sure I found out where that was, I went over to the Pumpkin TH. Arrived there as the only car at the TH, did the entire hike without seeing any other group, and arrived back at the TH with my car still being the only one there. Definitely a great choice if you're looking for solitude. By comparison I stopped by the Lava River Cave on the way back and there were 20+ cars and a school bus in the TH lol. I'll check that one out sometime

Anyway, I thought this trail was great. The first short portion is forested, followed by a massively burned area to about the halfway point, then back to another forested section up to the top. Last 1-1.5 miles include many switchbacks and I thought this was the best part. Lots of downed trees you have to navigate over and around

The bees were out in the masses on the mountain today. I didn't get stung fortunately but some other people did. Met a new friend on the way back down on round 2

Extreme winds at the top ridgeline where Heart connects with Sunset Trail. I enjoyed this trail quite a bit - it reminded me of the Weatherford Trail except with burned trees instead of living ones. Saw a snake on the trail at the start less than a 1/4 mile from the TH

Nice conditions the morning of this hike. Not even too much wind at the top. There are only 2 patches of snow left at the top of the trail about 30 yards from the lookout tower. My dog jumped into those 2 patches of snow asap. Big thanks to Jim_H for the updates on the conditions up there after the recent snowfall

This trail crosses the creek at least 10 times, and the flow from the snow melt was pretty strong but not so much to make the crossings difficult at all. This is a very relaxing trail, except for the mountain bikers you have to dodge every so often
