Since we were visiting my parents in Dewey AZ for the kids fall break the husband and I thought we would give ourselves our own break and leave the kids with Grandma and Grandpa to take a hike. I loved mount Union so much the first time I did this hike, I figured we couldnt go wrong hhiking it again. It was about 50 degrees cloudy windy and rainy but still was a great hike. We were the only ones on the trail (love that) like the last time. The aspen trees at the trail head were changing color which was nice. On the drive out on Walker road we saw about 10 deer! I rarely get the chance to hike with my husband so this trip was a great one.

Lets just start this trip log out by saying WOW! The idea of hiking Half Dome first came up back in November at Thanksgiving dinner when my brother and his wife asked me if I would be interested in going to Yosemite and hiking Half Dome with them in the summer. At the time yosemite sounded like a great idea, but half Dome seemed impossable for me to do. Before I knew it somewhere between November and June I had been convinced to hike half Dome!
Thursday morning the three of us were up at 4:30 am and out the door by 5am. the cabin we were staying in was in Yosemite west which was only about a half hour drive from Yosemite valley. By 5:30 we were at the trail head. Light was already coming thru the canyons so there was no need for head lamps as we started up the Mist trail. The air made the mist from Vernon falls very cold but still amazingly beautiful. Next up was Nevada falls then little Yosemite valley. By this point the alltitude was already messing with me, but we kept trekking. We found ourselves surrounded by deer in areas. Soon we came up to the subdome. Beyond the subdome I could see the cables in the distance....My first real glance at the cables! My heart about fell out of my chest and I asked myself why was I here?! I swallowed the lump in my throat and some how managed to make it up the subdome and at this point the cables were right in front of me. I managed to go about 15 feet up the cables before I looked back down (stupid idea) and told my sister in law I couldn't go any further and needed to go back down.
Thankfully she knows how to talk me into things and just kept telling me to look at her backpack (she was in front of me). Before I knew it we had a rythem down and the cables didn't seem to bad after all. Well as long as i didn't look down, up or to the sides. The one thing I didn't like was when someone would try to pass you going up the cables. I think it took us about 30 minutes to get up the cables and there we were, the top of Halfdome! It looked like what I would imagine the moon to look like. The views were something else! At the top we made some backpacking meals and coffee before we explored the area. When we checked out the side that faced Glacier Point we saw to climbers come up over the edge. They were a very nice couple from France that we had the pleasure of talking to. After about an hour or so on top it was time to make our way back down those scary cables. Going down was worses, but the people around you would talk you thru it which was a blessing! We had gone down about 40 feet when a large aluminum water bottle escaped from someones pack behind us. Everyone on the cables froze as we watched the bottled plumit down below us. The cables were dead silent for about 10 minutes after that, as we all had a reality check. Back at the bottem of the cables I wanted to kiss the ground, but the unfriendly Subdome still awaited us. That portion of the hike its self could use some type of cables in places but we made it down with out any issues. By 5:30-6:00 pm we were back at our vehicle and celebrating our accomplishment!
I must say, the adrenaline rush was nuts, the scenery and views were amazing, and I was so proud that I did it but I don't know if I can work up enough courage to do it again. If you ever find yourself in Yosemite and have the courage to do halfdome, I highly recommend it!!

Every time I read a triplog of this hike for some reason I longed to want to do it! It has been on my wishlist of a while now and I finally got myself out of town to do it! Well worth it! I picked up my mom who lives in Dewey on the way and we set off. We took our time heading up and checked out some of the mines on the way up (there still are active claims in the area). At the saddle I had a blond moment and made a left onto trail #284 instead of a right. It didn't take us to long before we figured out we were going the wrong way since we were headed back down hill instead of up. Headed back on track we made the final stretch to the top of Mount union. The fire lookout was not maned when we got up to the top, but the views from the summit were just as amazing as I thought they would be! It was really windy and the air had a slight chill to it that felt nice. We took a nice break at the top and enjoyed a snack before heading back down. On the way down we saw a few blue birds and caught the site of the beautiful male western tanager bird. I really enjoyed this hike and can't wait to get up there again!

Can't believe I have lived in AZ my entire life and have never done this hike before! Loved it! I just don't know if it was the best hike to do after recovering from a bad ankle sprain, I just took a lot of time coming down. I will be doing this one again, just need to wait until the ankle fully heals. Fun fun and challenging hike!

Wanted to get a quick hike in while the little one was in preschool. had to do something short and local since I was pressed for time. The waterfall trail was all I could think of, and I thought it would be running after the recent rain....but nope, it wasn't. Does that thing ever run?! Oh well, the low level clouds hanging over the White Tanks made for a beautiful hike.

I have a love/hate relationship with this trail. Love the views and work out you get, hate the hike up while doing it lol! I really wish this was alot closer to home so I could do it atleast 2-3 times a week and improve my time. Started the hike around 5pm and the temp was about 100 when I started (Where is fall). Most of the trail was in the sun and the heat and sun was really getting to me but I still was determined to make the summit, which I did. I did see two or three people hiking the summit in flip flops! Thought that was pretty crazy.

The husband and I spent the weekend in Sedona and decided to hike Bell Rock while we were there. We made it up as high as you can before you need climbing equipment. I learned that I am afraid of steep ledges and heights while making our way up the rock, but it made for an andrenalin rush going both up and down :) I think this was the funnest part of our mini-vacation while in Sedona. The views are simply amazing from the high points of Bell Rock.

I all ways enjoy a trail near water, so this trail was pretty enjoyable in my opinion. Though, just over the bridge and to the right about 20 feet off the trail was a dead deer with vultures buzzing over our heads. Made for a smelly :yuck: hike in that general area.

I still love this trail, despite the jumping cacti that decided it wanted to attack me :o! The wind made for a little bit of a chilly start, but was nice to have once we got going. I still love the views from the top of Lake Pleasant, the Cardinals stadium (That thing sticks out like a darn space ship from any part of town), the surrounding terrain, and even down town Phoenix are all breath taking!

Kept it on the easy side today given the fact that my kids are on spring break and would be joining me on this hike. Like normal, it was pretty busy there today. The waterfall had a very small trickle. I always enjoy this trail when hiking with my little ones.
