Had a relaxing hike in Lower Hackberry canyon. Had my first experience with quicksand. Fortunetly it was quick.

Did the Wiregrass Canyon hike. There was no marker at the trailhead, and I have a feeling I started at the wrong place. Where I started, there was a pouroff right at the start and I never found a way down into the canyon, so mine was a rim hike. I wandered over and hiked along another canyon to the east for a while. The views were great and it was an easy hike. Close to the canyon edge the ground was sandy and covered in thin rocks that break underfoot so you can't get too close to the edge. The colors were very muted, so pictures don't show how beautiful it is.

The HAZ directions didn't make sense to me so I stopped at the Grandstaircase/Escalante visitor center in Big Water where I got a map. The turn off of 89 is directly across from the visitor center, so coming from Page, you take a right onto Ethan Allen. after about 1/4 mile you come to a stop sign with a tan warehouse building facing you with the number 300 on it. You turn right onto Smoky Mtn Rd. The ranger told me to go down the road to where the stream crosses, then go 4 1/2 miles from there to where you see a flattened area where you can park. I drove around and never found a parking area, so I chose the wash closest to where he said and started there.

Started at Wirepass and walked a couple miles down Buckskin Gulch. Great day for it. Just guessing at the mileage. Can't wait to get down there for a longer hike when I have dry bags. Next time I'll tote my tripod. Deepest pool today was waist high.

Hiked this trail for the 2nd time. Great day for it. Heard a girl in her 20's say, "This would be an awesome place to be during a flash flood." I guess she hasn't hiked much around here.

Enjoyed this hike, but wished I wore jeans. Got lots of scrapes from the brush you have to go through to get there. The view from the aches was awesome.

I thinkI hiked around part of Coal Mine Canyon yesterday. I picked up the permit at Cameron and they gave me a very vague desripion of how to get there (so vague that I started out looking off of 160). After asking around I was told to go down 264 and turn across from an old rodeo. I found what looked like it could be an old rodeo area. There was a dirt road across from it that crossed a cattle guard and went up a hill. There was no picnic area or windmill as in the HAZ description. There was a residence with horses to the left. The road split at the hilltop and the right fork went down the hill and around the canyon.

The canyon did have the black stripe around the top, but I arrived late afternoon and didn't have time to hike very far around it. At one point I got so close to the canyon edge to take a picture that I scouted over on my bottom. As I went to crawl back I found myself looking at a snake in a crack between me and the canyon edge. :o I crab-walked past it, scrambled to my feet and got out of there. I never thought I'd thank God for all the crab soccer we had to play in gym class! :?

I came across what appeared to be an old ruin. It was a circle of stones a bit over a foot high with an east-facing opening. Most of my pictures came out way overexposed, I'll try to work on them and post any I can salvage.

I hope someone will let me know if it sounds like I was in the right place. I'd like to go back and see more of it.

Drove up to the Hopi Reservation to look around. The Hopi Culteral Center was closed except for the restaurant and the hostess there said she didn't know of any tours. So I stopped at some of the jewelry/craft shops on 2nd Mesa. Talked to some nice people. Everyone had a relative who gave tours, but I didn't find any of them at home. Stopped at a jewelry store an watched a man making intricate silver jewelry. He told me of the tour at Walpi.

The tour was spectacular. The guide was very knowledgeable and there were many people making and selling katchina dolls along the way. The handcarved dolls were great and even when I said I didn't have money to buy any, the artists were very nice about explaining the many kachinas and symbols anyway.

Someone above meantioned they saw lots of people with cameras. I didn't, and there were signs saying no photographs allowed and the guide told us as well. It is a shame for such a picturesque place. But the tour was well worth the $13.00.

Took the Glen Canyon Dam tour. Not really a hike, but worth the 5 bucks.

This little trail down to a view of the river and dam was lots more interesting than the Dam tour.

Went on a fairly short hike in Waterholes. Didn't want to stray too far since the sky was pretty cloudy. Nice sandy bottomed trail. Had a little trouble finding the trail back up to the rim and wound up doing a bit of climbing :o
