This was my second trip to the White Tanks but first on this trail. Trail is easy to follow, is well groomed and fun, a good variety of rock styles and lots of little birds and butterflies along the way. Planned to do the Willow Loop but just didn't quite go the distance and headed back once I reached the end of Mesquite - there's always next time i guess. I can see this becoming a possible favorite area as fall comes to the valley, this trail was great with a lot of small climbs followed by frequent flats - making it pretty friendly to a beginner like me! :)

The fact I had to drive carpool for 6:30 am band practice left me no excuse to not get an early morning hike done. This is the second time I've done Shaw Butte, the first time it was after doing North Mountain; today I started at the parking lot south of Central and Thunderbird. A nice morning hike, definitely got my heart pumping!

Had big storms in the valley yesterday so i was hoping that there might be water flowing at the end of the trail but...nope! Beautiful morning out, a little muggy with the humidity, I took my time and just kind of meandered the trail, enjoying the little lizards and toads along the way. This was my first time to the White Tanks and I know it definitely won't be my last. Lots to explore here!
I live in north Peoria and took the 303 to Olive then west to the White Tanks...piece of cake! Great way to get here and skip morning traffic on the 101, it will be even better when the 303 is finished!

Even at 6:50 pm it's 104!! Kept it kind of short today, did the beginner loop and about half the standard loop. Once the sun started to go down the heat wasn't nearly as intense even with the high temp. Was a little worried about getting caught in the dark so I cut it short, in hind sight I should've just finished the loop...live and learn! ;)

A little cooler this morning so I thought I'd re-visit West Wing. Managed to forget my sunscreen and once the sun burned off the morning cloud cover it got pretty hot! No bees this time around despite the known large hive on the West end Scenic offshoot. Overall a nice morning, just a bit too hot for this novice!

Family was taking in Phoenix Comicon so I escaped for a quick trip and took in fishing at Wet Beaver Creek, V Bar V Historical Site, and Montezumas Well.

First time on Lookout, but with a storm quickly headed toward the valley I skipped doing the loop and wend directly to the summit. I liked the quick, steep nature of this one and the view as the storm came in was impressive. It started to rain as I reached the summit so I quickly made my way down; before I reached the bottom the sky was full of lightning and the rain was coming in sideways! Back at the car I was soaked but loved every minute! :y:

Had done North Mountain before but never had tackled Shaw Butte let alone stacking them, this was HUGE for me! Following the trek outlined by the Phoenix Summit Challenge for 2011 I set out. I have a "love-hate" relationship with North Mts and by the time I hit about 2/3 the way up Shaw Butte I wished I had more than a yogurt for breakfast and thought I was going to quit. Had a nice sit down on the south bench and decided I'd better muscle through...and it was worth it- managed to leave part of the sole of my trailrunners on the downside of Shaw though!

This was my first trip to South Mountain to tackle the Holbert Trail to Dobbin's Lookout in preparation for the Summit Challenge. ;) Weather was perfect, partly cloudy and in the 60's. Trail was well marked and the rocks and petroglyphs along the way made for great scenery,
This marked my biggest challenge so far, not so much by distance but by elevation gained. Definitely need decent footwear with the rocky landscape. Looking forward to trying this one again in the future.

I like to fish along the water near the Pipeline Canyon trail, this day I had my brother-in-law visiting from Washington State and took him and the kids for a quick hike.

Took the kids for their first hike on West Wing and it definitely made for a different experience! Basically went to the top and back without doing the loop; got one kid with a paralyzing fear of bees and we ran into a HUGE hive and that was pretty much it for the day - honestly I was just happy he didn't run off the side of the mountain! :)

First time on this trail even though it's only 5 minutes from the house. Trail begins at West Wing Park and is well marked and easy to navigate. I stuck to the standard trail, not venturing this time on any of the short scenic lookouts. Started at about 8:30 am, skies were partly cloudy and it was a perfect first visit to this friendly neighborhoos spot!

A good friend completed the 2011 7 Peaks Challenge and suggested as I beginner that I should try to do the 4 Peaks in 2012 - this is where I began.
Started out at about 9 am from the Visitor Center following Trail #100 to the junction of #101. #101 was a nice stretch of well groomed trail until it met with the paved road that runs to the summit. The good thing about the journey to the top is that it's paved, which is not to say that it made it easy. This was a great challenge for me as a beginning hiker, with it's considerably steep grade my goal was to not stop until I reached the summit and I was pretty happy with myself when I did.
Coming down from the gate I was told if I wanted to get a good picture that I should take the short trail to the other side of the towers, it was good advice and the short distance was worth it for a panoramic view of the valley. I was striving for a respectable time and pushed myself to lightly jog a good distance downhill on the paved road and then periodically after leaving the pavement to return to the visitor center.
There were friendly and supportive folks all along the journey, I particularly remember a guy with a pug who as they were cruising by said I "had a good pace going"; if he hadn't been so friendly about it I'd have sworn he was mocking me! :)
It was the first of the 4 peaks I plan to keep training on to prepare for the 2012 Challenge and I can't imagine it will get mundane any time soon. Not sure on the distance though, just using the 2.3 miles described for Summit 6 - not feeling like I could have possibly been averaging more than 3 mph.

Started from the West Wing Park parking lot, again walking the kids to school before heading out. Completed the Advanced Loop for the first time, if you can do the intermediate loop there's no reason you can't tackle this one. The distance is a little further with 2 short climbs that are no more difficult that what you've already done - and is well worth it! There's just one stretch parallel to Happy Valley road where the trail is a little narrow but footing is secure with no real issues.

Parked at the West Wing park as the entrance from the school will be locked. Walked the kids to the gate and headed up the hill. Morning was beautiful and cool and I expected to see more people on the trail but only saw 4 folks the entire loop! Last time I took the trail to the left of the intermediate loop fork, this time I challenged myself to take the "difficult" right side trail and I'm so glad I did. Coming up the hillside from this direction with the sun coming up was worth the extra effort! Was able to "jog" (a term I use pretty loosely) a little along the way back. Grooming on this trail is great and even as a beginner I feel confident with my footing.

Enjoyed the Beginner Loop a few days ago so decided to try the Intermediate loop. I really enjoyed the challenge of this trail, as you complete the beginner loop and start the intermediate section there's a fork with the more difficult trail to the right - being my first time I stuck to the left. ;) Trail has a few rocky parts as you wrap around the hillside with a steady, moderate climb and my heart was definitely pumping by the time I reached the top. The trip down the "difficult' side was a little steeper and rockier but wouldn't really say it was difficult. Great views of the surrounding neighborhoods with a glimpse of Lake Pleasant to the north.

I definitely put myself in the category of "beginner" so decided to start with a hike close to home. Started out just doing the Beginner Loop around 7:30 am entering through the gate on the west side of the West Wing School parking lot (this enterance point isn't available when school is in). Nice gradual climb along a well groomed trail the whole way, not much traffic and it was a great way to begin my hiking adventures. Trail was quick, just over half an hour for the 1.5 mile loop.
