Finally got around to this trail. Usually when I go to Flag I end up at Humphrey's or Abineau/Bear Jaw.

It was a really nice trail. I will be going down to Phantom Ranch in a few weeks and the elevation profile is a decent match to Kaibab/Bright Angel. It may not be a day of uphill or downhill like the Grand Canyon, but a good training hike without getting into shuttles.

Humphreys is a little steeper, and the air is a little thinner, so I will be back in Flag more than usual this year so I am prepared for the Grand Canyon.

A week earlier we did Groom trail and went up in the lookout tower. There is a tower on top of Kendrick, but they were removing asbestos from the glazing compound that holds the windows in place. We were unable to up, so maybe when we return we will be invited up.

We did it mid week and passed only two people (not counting the workers at the top). The trail is in good condition, not rocky, has some shade, nice consistent pitch.

May try Pumpkin or Bull Basin some time - different ways to get to the summit.

This hike has some misleading info. When you start from the Strawberry side, a sign says the forest road is 2.5 miles. Maybe if you are a bird (as the crow flies). Google maps shows 2.4 miles between trailheads.

On the HikeAZ page, the GPS data for this trail is 3.92 - this is accurate for one way (but it says roundtrip is 4.25). So it is around 4.0 if you are shuttling it.

Around the 3 mile mark the trail overlaps some atv trails, and at one point there was fork in the road. We veered left to reach a car for those who were 'shuttling' it and had hiked the trail several times before. This car was not parked at the point where the trail crosses the road.

The rest of us walked about 3/4 of a mile up the road to get where the trail officially crosses the road. When we arrived at the atv trails area again we followed it for a while and then chose what appeared to be a footpath but the trail soon vanished so we had to do a little off trail hiking to get back to the trail.

So the ATV trails require you to make some decisions if you don't have a GPS.

Finally got around to doing this trail. 5 years ago we made it to the trail head but decided to do Half moon because heard Barndhardt was steep.

Signage was not good the parking lot. You see a gate on the right/south side of parking lot, and a sign that says Trail 42, and another that is faded. I knew this was the way to Half moon so wandered to the south side of parking lot, past some trees, and there was the Barnhardt sign.

The trail is perfect pitch for us, 1500 feet evenly spread out over 3 miles, only 1 short section required "low gear". You never felt like you were really climbing but looking down at the trail was a different story.

I have driven past this trail for over 10 years and really regret not going sooner! Close to Phoenix, a good workout, and great views.

The drive was easy but we were looking for FR374 and it was labeled Granite Basin Road (once you made the turn there was a FR374 sign). I think 2 out 3 people in our group missed the turn.

It was a little warm and humid (rain day before) which made the first hour a little uncomfortable until some clouds came in and gave us some shade. There was thunder and lightening in the distance near the end of the hike, but we stayed dry.

99% of the time the trail was easy to follow. A few places it was a little overgrown and there were never any cairns. It was one of the few hikes I was glad I had a GPS in a couple of places. I had to choose between my Arizona Topo map and the route downloaded from hikearizona (which was accurate). Once we ended up in a wash when the trail was 50 ft to the right up on a hill.

The intersections of the trails, and FR374B and C was confusing if you had to rely on signs. I would give a route finding difficulty of 1 if you could completely rely on signs and cairns, but this trail get a 2 because of a few issues on the trail and at an intersection.

The elevation change was nice, not too bad for a warm (90F) and humid day. We went ccw even though we intended to go cw. We expected to hit an intersection and choose left or right, but after hiking a few minutes we turned on the GPS and realized we were already going cw and we didnt' want to backtrack.

This was probably good, even though we like going up the steep part , on this hike we didn't mind going downhill.

If we return we will go the other direction. The hike had some great views, and nice rock formations, but there was nothing exciting about it.

Was a perfect day - temps where around 70 (after it was 100 about a week ago), sunny, and a nice breeze.

You could see snow in the distance because the day before it had rained (and was about 50 in the valley).

I had not been to the White Tanks for about 10 years. Lots of improvements, nice bathrooms, and good trails.

Plan to come back in the winter and check out Ford Canyon.

We did this as a day trip on Labor day weekend. We usually go in the middle of the long weekend to avoid traffic, but Saturday was our only option. I almost turned around at Anthem, but once we got to the Prescott exit, traffic was normal.

Surprisingly the parking lot was empty and we passed 1 hiker on the trail.

You have great views at all times on this short little loop.

We started at the viewpoint trail head. During the hike there were about 20 gliders in the air. I was hoping to get to the top before they all landed but we were too late (should have went cw in of ccw).

I like any hike that goes along a stream so this one is a favorite. It took my 10 years to start hiking the east supes, but this hike and Haunted Canyon (which I did a few weeks earlier) are both very nice and each have their pro/cons.

Typically I like a hike with a 'destination' at the midpoint/lunch spot of our day hikes, but this lacks something like Tony's cabin (or a swimming hole). The corral at Oak Flat was our turn around spot.

I would like to return again in the fall to see if there are some good colors.

This hike was one of those a bunch of little things snowballed into making it a bigger than usual adventure.

I planned on using the 'southern' trailhead. I knew it was right before the bridge but I did not realize it was 1.5 miles down the road - which is closed - so I missed it. No problem, we will park at the northern trailhead.

The hike was a little more desert than expected, a little overgrowth in spots, but a nice hike. We ate at Tony's cabin. We talked about splitting up the group so half of use could check out the lower portion of the trail but we decided to stay together and headed back.

Why doesn't the trail look familiar? Why is the stream flowing the same direction? Oh, we aren't going back - we are all going down the lower half. Do we backtrack a little? Nah....the group votes to keep going. The trail was awesome - lots of creek crossings and fallen trees - things I like.

We made it to the trailhead. People are getting tireed, but now we need to walk 1.5 miles down the closed road to the open road.

Made it to open road, now it is 4 miles back to the trucks! Nobody around to hitch a ride. Most the group waits at the bridge while we double time to the trucks arriving just after dark!

Drive back to pick up people shivering in the dark ;)

I think it was about 14 miles and usually we hike about 7 (but I didn't even feel it the next day!).

I would like to hike the lower half again in the fall, but the closed road adds a lot of mileage and a shuttle takes up too much time. Guess I will decide in the fall what to do (West Pinto???)

I did this hike about 10 years ago and I can not believe it took 10 years to return.

The drive is very scenic. I wish I would have cleaned my windshield before we left because lots of pics were taken even before we got out of the truck.

I was a little worried about one section of the road. I remember a hair pin turn followed by a steep incline and our pick up truck was spinning its tires until we put it into 4wd. I read a post about a 2wd pick up trucks shoveling rock into the bed to add weight. Maybe different weather conditions but my 2wd Xterra had no issues.

The hike is a nice trail w/o any big elevation changes. The ruins are awesome except for the jerks who have etched their names in over the years.

There wasn't much water in the stream, a spring hike might be interesting if the road in is not flooded.

This is a classic. I took my mother, who is not a hiker, here for mother's day. She really enjoyed and so did I even though it was my 4th time. I never get there for the fall colors, but I will try this year.

The small park lot limits the number of hikers which is nice if you were able to find a parking spot.

We did this trip in the fall and it was amazing. Surprisingly the higher elevation and the elevation change did not effect me.

The trail was perfect for hiking - the fall colors were wonderful, not one piece of litter even though many people were on trail, and wide enough to walk besides my girlfriend.

I am anxious to go again this year because it was a great trail and we didn't quite make it to the top.
