Diane and I did this hike while staying in Flag for the weekend. First really arduous hike since the "assault"!
We went very slowly and my lungs were killing me as we ascended. Diane did a great job considering the altitude change. We got to the top in 2.15. Got rained on on the way up and down so we were cold at the bottom, and wet. Went in the hotel jacuzzi to warm up.
Glad I managed to get to the top though it was very arduous and painful coming down. Got some warm mocha and lunch from New Frontiers, a great supermarket in Flagstaff and ate dinner at Brix.

Beautiful day for a hike with Diane and Aussie.
The trail has been expanded since we last hiked this and I do not like the new piece as the trail is another "Pinnacle Peak" scar on the beautiful earth.

Set out for the Inner Basin around 1pm on Saturday after driving up from Phoenix.
Met Ron in Camp Verde and drove to Lockett Meadow.
It was touch and go whether we were going to camp or just do a day hike due to the weather being so unpredictable.
We decided to camp above the Inner Basin and got there in about 2 hours with our packs.
It was raining pretty heavily then and we tried to find some sheltered spot to pitch our tents.
It continued to rain on and off all night but was clear in the morning.
We left our tents and headed towards the summit at 7am. We met some friends at the saddle where the Snow Bowl trail meets the Inner Basin route.
Finally (after 3 previous attempts) got to the summit at 9.30am. The clouds started rolling in as soon as we got there so not much of a view.
Hiked back to camp and packed up and reached Lockett Meadow around 1pm, fully exhausted.
As we left the ara we could see huge rain storms all around Flagstaff and the San Francisco peaks.
Glad I finally conquered the Big One!!

Cold and blowy day in Sedona, but ideal for this hike.
Diane and I started off about 11.30am and got to the 6300ft level where we found a lot of snow so we could not go any higher. Met a few people on the trail, but it was very quiet.
Beautiful views all around, including the gorgeous view of Mount Humphrey's, with smoke around it!! (Maybe a prescribed burn)

Bary and I went to Sabino Canyon while waiting for Annie to get out of school.
Hiked in Bear Canyon for 1 hour then back out. Very cold but beautiful and sunny. The cold wind had cleared the air and the sky was brilliant blue.

Drove Annabelle back to UofA and Barry and I drove on to Chiricahua NM and hiked to the Inspiration Point. It was very cold, about 35F but the sun kept us warm when not in the shade.
A beautiful natural wonder, especially the view of Cochise Head.

Well I finally cracked an achievement on this Mountain!! I've been wanting to visit this site for years, and failed once in December due to weather.
Diane and I had a nice hike up the trail and left at the 7th switchback. I would never have found this site without the GPS coordinates, they were so spot on that my GPS beeped and told me I was there immediately upon seeing the first piece of wreckage.
It's a somber reminder of the perils of flying. I presume the fuselage was removed as I saw no sign of it, just wings and controls surfaces and some other major parts.
Got rained on coming down but we were lucky whilst we were in the crash field as the weather held off until we got back in the trees.

Tried, somewhat foolishly considering the weather, to find the site after 3" of snow had fallen overnight.
It was snowing when we started at the trail head and got heavier as we climbed.
We reached the 7th switchback in about 1hr 50 mins but found that there was too much snow on the ground there to proceed further. There was about 6" of snow at 11,200'.

We came back down in 1hr and 10 mins. We had to drive slowly down the hill from the snow bowl as the raod wasn't clear. There was a truck that had gone over the edge being pulled out; looked like it had hit a tree.

This is the 3rd time now that I have tried to go somewhere on Mt Humphrey's and failed each time.
I'll be back!!

Neat geological feature this. Went with Barry and Nick.
Nick kept his sunglasses on for effect!!
About 2" of snow on the road in but it was OK without a 4w drive.
Found a very small air passageway about 3/4 of the way in after a low tunnel. You could hear the air blowing in from above.
Pity that some idiots have left trash in the tunnel, spoils it for everyone.

Set out from Lockett Meadow at 7am in good weather.
Reached Weatherford trail in good time (1.5hrs) and reached the top of the tree line (around 11,800ft) before it started to rain.
Clouds were all around and then it started to hail.
I put on my Helly Hansen which turned out to not be waterproof!!
After a few minutes of hiding behind a rock (and surprising a couple of Iron Men running up the mountain in vests and shorts!!), I decided to plug on.
Then the lightning started!! It sounded like it was extremely close.
Again I hid under a rocky overhang and waited for a clearing.
By this time I was soaked and cold.
With another break in the lightning I hurried to the saddle by Agassiz and decided it was too dangerous to proceed, even though I met a guy coming down who said there were people at the summit and he had just come from there...mad!!!

So I gave up and made the sensible choice to go back down. I reached the meadow before it stopped raining and took off most of my clothes so I could dry out and defrost!

Got back to my tent and changed clothes and had a lovely 1 hour sleep in my cosy tent.

Lessons learned -
Check the weather before you leave Phoenix
Plan your trip outside of monsoon or snow season
Aclimatize first (which I did and had no trouble with the altitude)
Take and/or wear good waterproofs, year-round
Hike with somebody taller than you so they get hit by lightning first!!

I will be back to claim this mountain!!

I drove up to Lockett Meadow on Friday morning and as I arrived at the turn-off I asked a leaving camper if there were places in the camp site.
They told me there were and that some hikers had left the lights on in their van, so if I were to meet them, to tell them.
The camp site was practically empty, and such a beautiful location, with clean toilets and beautiful views.

I set up tent and started out at 1pm on an aclimatization hike for the attempt at Humphrey's peak the next day.
I quickly caught up with the 10 hikers who had left their lights on and it turned out they were on a 4 day hike around the peaks. So I took the keys to the van after convincing them that I was coming back down the trail in a few hours.

Hiked to the Weatherford trail and glad I did as my breathing was definitely in need of aclimatization.

When I got back to the camp site somebody had already switched the lights off by way of poking a stick through an open window and had left a note to this effect in the door of the van.

See triplog for 7/8/2006 to Humphrey's peak by way of Inner Basin and Weatherford trail.

Went looking for Ogre's Den with Mike, who had found it a few months ago.
Very unusual Den and it looks very comfortable, would be interested if anybody knows the history of this. Had to be tough taking all that stuff (stove, bench etc.) up a trail that is not easy.
Went on to Tom's Thumb. A beautiful day in the mountains, after the recent winds the air was very clear and it was only 65F up there at 7am. Didn't want to come down

A favourite in the winter, but right now, even at 6am, it got a bit hot towards the end.
The ranger station was closed, I guess for the season as we were expecting to pay.
Only saw a very determined and energetic mountain-biker.
The Saguaro flowers are in full bloom facing the sun.
A lot of pesty insects around which annoyed us.
Hoped to see some snakes, but I think we were a bit early as the sun was not up on the west side of the trail.
Looking north the Palo Verde are losing their vivid yellow colour, but still magnificent

Very cold at the top with snow covering the trail very near the summit and lookout tower.

Fantastic views of the Coconino Plateau and SP Crater lava Field.
Very interesting rocks and geographic features to see.
Had a blast!

May 18th 2005
SP Crater is a fabulous example of a volcanic cone (technically a basaltic andesite cone) in the San Francisco Volcanic Field north of Flagstaff.
The drive is easy and you don't need a 4-wheel drive vehicle unless you want to do some further exploring in this very interesting region.

The directions given by Misubri are perfect. If you have a 4-wheel drive you can drive right up to the starting point. If not, park at the left side base and walk up the tracked road to the ideal starting location on the west side.

The climb is somewhat difficult in that the shingly cinder rocks slide your feet backwards as you climb, but if you walk diagonally you can purchase your grip on the larger rocks and vegetation.

The view from the top is incredible, especially the lava field spanning for 5 miles to the north. The attached aerial photograph was not taken by me but by Wendell Duffield, of the U.S. Geological Survey, and best shows the cone and the whole of the lava field which spans for 5 miles.

There are so many things to see and do whilst hiking around the rim.
There is another crater off to the East, I could not find its name. The Colton crater to the south can be clearly seen and the snow-capped San Francisco peaks at this time of the year are beautiful.

We initially wanted to go to Sunset Crater but they have stopped people climbing to the top now. This crater more than made up for what we didn't see at Sunset.

Coming down was a blast as you can foot ski in the areas on the south side that have very shingly lava rocks, but try and keep in somebody else's tracks so as not to spoil the natural look of the cone.

Drive up to Lockett Meadow is closed for at least another week due to rock slides and tree fals on the road
We walked from the gate and entered Lockett Meadow after about an hour.
Continued up to Inner basin trail and met snow at 9000 ft.
At the Weather huts the snow was still up to the roofs of the huts.
Went a little further but decided against climbing more in the snow.
Came back down and continued back to the entrance.
Total time was 4.5 hours
It was extremely windy the whole day.
We camped at Bonito camp ground and our tent would have blown away if it wasn't for the two of us lying in it.
