this route had it all!!! exposure, ruggedness, a cave (!), a spring (!!), ruins, a condor sighting (!!!), rafters, beach hangs, and a lovely group of leprechauns.

headed down sunday around 9am. we spent the whole day in the sun, but thankfully it wasn't too hot. i am terrified of heights/exposure, and it definitely took me over an hour to slowly make my way down the sketchy feces to the main wash. once there it was just an easy cruise towards the trail that takes you around the narrows and dumps you down to the ruins/beach. about three miles in we met a lovely group decked out in st patrick's gear (our leprechauns) who were hiking back towards the climb. they were planning to camp 1/2 up the climb on a nice ledge where they had stashed water on their way in.

once at the beach we encountered three scottsdale guys who came down the UPS route in bedrock canyon saturday. they clearly didn't have permits and didn't give any poos about the no fire rule. i hate humans sometimes.

we eventually made our way to stanton's cave and the spring. man oh man! that spring is incredible! we spent a decent amount of time there taking it all in, filling up our water, and watching some rafters go by. then we headed back to the beach where we consumed delicious beer, sat in awe of a condor flying over the canyon, and eventually watched day turn to night. it was the best.

we were up early monday morning and started hiking out about 7am. the main wash was a bit of a slog. i was really nervous about the climb out. i thought the exposure would mess with my brain, and i'd end up taking hours to get out. well, the exposure definitely messed with me, but it had me cruising up the route. i just wanted to be done. we met our leprechaun friends about 1/4 from the top, chatted with them for about 30 mins, and then exited the canyon in just under 4hrs.

we waited by the car for our new friends, and they showered us with tons of st. patrick's day gear. humans can be so wonderful!!!

i have a permit next weekend and another at the end of april, but i have a feeling those trips won't be happening due to covid-19

had a permit for south canyon on sunday night. we decided to drive up friday night, camp in flag, continue the drive up saturday morning, and then hike up to saddle mountain.

neither of us have been to this area. we were blown away! SO STUNNING.

we started on the trail, but then quickly made a wrong turn, and ended up on a trail that took us to the top of a hill with a big cairn and a dead end. so we just started going up. stormy weather on and off the whole way up & down. lots of rainbows. deep snow in some of the ravines. lots of dead plants with sharp pokies. didn't do too much exploring at the top because it was snowing, but over all it was a very enjoyable off trail route to the summit.

i've been fascinated by the power family ever since i learned about them during my first trip to aravaipa in dec 2018. our planned trip was to backpack the power's garden loop starting at the deer creek trailhead.

however, that did not happen. somewhere between the turn off for klondyke rd and the trailhead chris lost his phone. ](*,) so we spent sunday morning retracing some of our drive to see if we could find it. that made for a much later start to our hike.

we still had every intention of doing the full trip, so we set off on the east divide trail with full packs. THIS AREA IS STUNNING. i can't get enough it. the first few miles were beautiful and uneventful. then we got to the pumpkin. full packs, up hill, on an extremely overgrown trail with snow. it was great until it wasn't. by the time we got to the saddle i was HANGRY and declared i was over it. we dropped our packs, hiked up to the top of kennedy, enjoyed a long salami & cheese break while taking in the views, and then headed back down to the trailhead. with a full stomach, the miles back to the trailhead went by quicker. chris's bad ankle was really starting to bother him once we turned around. thankfully, my hanger declaration worked out for the best.

normally, i LOVE overgrown trails because it means solitude, but my brain was just not having it this trip. oh well, just means i get to come back!

headed to the east side for two days and one night of fun. we did a technical canyon with four rappels (one was unnecessary, but good practice)that eventually dumped us into the wilderness. after that was done, we backpacked in to the lovely campsite near hell hole canyon. woke up early saturday morning to explore hell hole as far as time would allow (about three miles one way), then headed back to pack up camp and head out! total mileage for the weekend was just over 20.

finally got to knock of R2R2R this past weekend!

i had fun the whole damn day, and surprisingly, the group stayed close together for the majority of the hike.

started down the trail at 4:20am. south kaibab to phantom was quick and uneventful. the box and then the last few miles to cottonwood were hot but still enjoyable.

things dragged a bit after the supai tunnel - that last 1.5M to the top seemed never ending. once we topped out on the north rim, and i inhaled some bacon and a donut, all was well! there was a bit of snow on the ground from the previous storm. we stayed up on the north rim a bit longer than i would have liked because we had a few people in our group trying to figure out if they were going to turn around or take a shuttle back to the south rim. we started heading back down around 1:20ish.

heading back down the north rim to cottonwood and through the box went by FAST and was rather pleasant. i was a bit nervous about hiking up bright angel during the dark, but once again, it went by quick! once i hit the two mile switch back i picked up my pace and managed to be one of the first to top out on bright angel. we finished just shy of 19hrs.

salt chews, bacon, and almond m&ms got me through the 44M, the company was wonderful, and i felt strong the entire day!

we headed down BA around 5:45am and less than two hours later were hanging out at the summit. this was way easier than i thought it would be, and the climb up to the top was so fun! i had the route downloaded to a GPS, but everything was super straight forward. traversing over from the two mile switchback went quicker than expected, and once i found the duck formation we were up at the top in no time. after taking the views in we headed back down and did some exploring around the plateau. then it was the quick traverse across and the climb out of the canyon. i think the whole thing took us about 6hrs. we were't in any hurry - just took our time to enjoy the views and all the sunshine!
