Been exploring the Catalinas. This is a nice trip, Marshall Gulch is pretty crowded but once you get to the Wilderness of Rocks trail it's nice, I saw two couples the whole time on that trail. It's uphill 800' 1.2 mi.on Marshall to the saddle where you take the W.O.R. trail downhill about 800' about 3 mi. to the mouth of the canyon. There was still lots of water in Lemmon Creek and in the canyon. It was flowing a little and the pools were 1-2' in the creek to 2-4 feet deep in the canyon. The water was cool-cold enough to refresh as it was 80+ on Sat. I stayed wet all day.
The canyon is one tough MF to negotiate, the rough granite boulders are HUGE and round. I got back a little ways and got to a 40' waterfall. I was too tired to climb out of the canyon to get around it which was the only was I could see to get around it. Gorgeous canyon! The pools were very clean and clear since it was flowing and the bottoms are mostly granite pebbles. I want to backpack this to spend a day 'fresh' to explore the canyon.

This is a very pleasant loop with great views. We went up the Aspen and down the Marshall. You go in and out of the burned area. The new young aspens are already about 10' tall in thick stands. The Marshall trail along the creek is gorgeous! The trail on Sunday was pretty crowded, too much for me. I'm liking the Catalinas, next time we'll try a less popular trail.

Lots of water, highest I've seen. Great swimming, great canyon boulder scrambling. Close to Phx. Lots of sandy campsites and driftwood for fires. Gorgeous sonoran desert and ripirian flora. Lots of snakes, bats, coyotes, you name it!

The weather service blew the forecast so it 18 degrees the first night, we were planning for mid 60s - 30s. BRRRR. Even the creek froze over. The trail was good, and there was water above ground off and on from the trailhead all the way to the ranch. The creek level at the ranch was pretty low however considering the rain we've had. Looks like the FS isn't doing much trail maintenance these days. The trial goes around fallen trees in several places. The trail signs are in good shape. Too much trash at the ranch... Pretty sloppy people! :x We saw deer and a ring-tail cat. :D

This is a pretty severe day hike. The road from Apache Trail to the TH was just graded, smooth as a baby's bottom, take your Civic. The drop into the canyon is 1600 feet. So you have to climb out too. The trail off of 109 was marked by a cairn. The trail from there is faint and over grown by prickly pear and brush in places but serviceable. There are some orange ribbons tied to the trees and some cairns to mark the trail down into the canyon as well. Be prepared to bushwhack some. There is also a false bottom, you first hike into a tributary canyon before you get to Reavis creek. The Trail goes up and back down again after the bottom of the first canyon. Once in the main Canyon, it's pretty rugged. It's choked with boulders, unlike most canyons with smooth boulders, most are pretty sharp. Fallen trees, and dead leaves, blanket the canyon, vines to catch your feet, and pools to scramble over and around. It's beautiful, lots of Sycamores to Saguaro. Took me as long to get to the falls from the bottom as it did to get from the top to the botom. The falls were seeping, trickling and misting. It's very pretty. It snowed last weekend and all of the Northern slopes were still dusted. Give yourself a good 9-10 hours for a day hike, I did it in 7 with about and hour of total breaks-rest included. I'm pretty beat up and sore!

I started at Woodbury TH this time and hiked west through Fraiser Canyon to the Red Tanks trail and Dripping Spring. I explored about a mile north on the Red Tanks Trail. After the hike up the hill from the Woodbury TH on an old road the trail gets hard to follow down by the windmill. I followed a carin and took what looked like a game trail over the hill to the JF Ranch. This trail runs into the road that the ranch uses which is gated near Woodbury TH. Parking near the that gate and walking down the road is also a way to get there. North of the ranch along the fence is finally a FS sign for the Coffee Flat trail. Go through the gate and the trail runs along the ranch fence. After the ranch and the wilderness sign the trail winds along creek bed. Most of the trail has not been cleared in a while and most of the time it's easier to follow the creekbed and to ignore the carins. This is fairly rugged hiking in sand and rock-boulder hopping. The creekbed and canyon are quite lovely. There are two spots where the are Sycamores and spring waters. We had only had a litle rain since summer and the springs were still running with decent pools for filtering water. At Dripping Spring water was flowing down along the intersection with the Red Tanks trail for maybe a 1/4 mile.

This is a great day hike in the Sups. It is probably the least amount of climbing and dropping in the whole area for a 12 mile stretch. After the short climb out of Peralta it's mostly "easy" hiking for the Superstitions. You basically follow the valley to the end. Miner's needle and the rock spires just east are always a sight. The Saguaros per square mile must be at record number there. The views around the Coffee Flat area are also very pretty. I got to the old windmills at "Reeds'" water I guess it's called, can't miss it, lots of Cottonwoods. Hey someone needs to grease the widmill, it groans loudly when the wind picks up. There were still pools around. There you come to a fence which is the southern wilderness boundary where I scared a herd of cattle, and they scared me too. Maybe 50 cows took off at the same time, sounded like thunder. They must not see too many people back there. The water down there was pretty mucked up by the cattle, but up by the windmill was cleaner filterable water. There must be a lot during rainy season. I lost the trail down there at the creek bed and decided to turn back, I'm sure I would have found it eventually if I wanted to go on.

The trailhead is not marked from the highway there's just a small side road and a wire gate. There is a sign once you walk south a few hundred feet. I hiked down the Rim to the floor of the canyon and explored the canyon especially upstream. The trail takes you past a couple of side canyons ( with signs ) after you finish "the switchbacks" before you hit the creek. The creek was flowing quite well and the leaves were just starting to turn. The canyon was gorgeous, cool, and I saw no one. Campsites are plentiful at the bottom. Nice place to walk around, camp, spend time. The trail intersects the creek with signs to continue to the Pine trailhead, instead I followed a faint trail that goes upstream for at least a mile. It was marked "to deep pools", not sure if I found them but it's a lovely trail that follows the water. I hiked back out up the switchbacks which was quite a nice challenge.

Very impressive hike. I was the only one on the trail. Very humid day during the prolific monson experienced in S. AZ. Everything was wet and after about 8,000 feet I was hiking in and out of the clouds, or fog I guess. I saw deer, many red birds, and two Peacocks at the peak! No kidding, they were completely unafraid of me. At the peak all I could see was fog, with a few small breaks were I could see the world below. The trail starts in Manzanita and scrub Juniper, and then through various pines and through stands of young Aspen and grassy meadows with flowers. It's 2,000 feet straight up but totally gorgeous.

Hell's Hole, had to go there... too good a name. The trail was lovely, shaded in Pine, Alligator Juniper, etc.. Goes up then down, then level, and down about 1000 ft. to the creekbed. Backpacking during Monson season on a very wet weekend is always a risky venture so, I was ready for anything? So, it rained on and off until I got to about mid-way down into the canyon when hail and ice starts coming down sideways about dime to quarter size ice chunks are pelting me even from under a nice tree shelter I quickly hid under. I had to yank out my sleeping pad to protect myself from the chunks that were hitting me in the head, kinda felt like someone throwing a penny at your head, hard!... So, I was completely soaked when the storm moved past. I was planning to stay the night near the canyon bottom, but, Workman Creek wasn't even flowing, just nasty pools. I was counting on water there to stay the night and probably could have pumped from the nasty pools and been fine, but now I wasn't in the mood. I ended up hiking back out with a my full pack and calling it a day. This is a very pretty canyon and I intend to go back in the spring and overnight after a good snow pack melts, or maybe AFTER a good monsoon season when the creeks are really flowing. There was water in Reynolds creek near the ranch some flow and pools, but Workman was only pools. Two small deer followed me on and off most of the trip, I'd see them once and a while and see their fresh tracks in the mud quite a lot.

Nice Saturday in the canyon. Saw 3 people on the trail, 1 couple and a lone hiker. FYI..This trail does not follow Christopher creek. It crosses C.C. near the trailhead and goes up the East of the creek. Gorgeous forest, shady, lots of fallen trees from storms but lots of shade. It's great easy day hike. It was very wet, humid, and sprinkling rain much of the hike with thunder almost the whole time, very cool. Trail goes to the top to intersect the Highline.

106 in Phoenix and 75 on Peely. Of course the drive is half the fun, lots of burned areas since my last visit. Still beautiful. The views all along the drive to the trailhead are spectacular. People keep shooting the signs... what fools, they get worse every time I go. I saw a deer up near the top in the woods. The pines near the top are only burnt along the sides and seem to be recovering. The burnt areas are coming back in the brush land also. I drove to the top of Mt. Ord also, very nice views.

We drove right to the top of Waldroup Canyon courtesy of my "new" '91 Toyota 4X4 pickup and hiked down to the Main Canyon. Waldroup itself is a pretty cool excursion, it's alot of fun finding a way down or around the different cliffs/waterfalls. Takes a good 2 hours with a pack to hit the Main Canyon. It's also very neat to see the dry creekbed suddenly fill with water when you reach the spring about 1/4 to 1/2 mile downstream from the Waldroup intersection. The first must swim pool is shortly thereafter and another one about a quarter mile down. This may be the most rugged canyon I've tried to hike. Trees and brush and an incredibly slippery creekbed make it slow going. We got past the two swims and two waterfalls and maybe 2 miles downstream and it was just rugged and slow and looking the same so we doubled back to the 2nd waterfall to camp. Beautiful place, clean water, not that cold. We only had one night so we went back up from the second falls the next morning. Someday maybe we can shuttle or loop it. The most spiders I've ever seen, but no bites!

This time I went from first water TH to Black Mesa Trail, take time to climb up to Black Mesa for views galore! Find a path through the Cholla! Worth it! I got to the Valley where the Dutchman, Boulder Canyon, Black Mesa, trails converge and this time got good view of the arch. I also scrambled up Bull Pass before taking the Dutchman back to F.W.

Took the loop, 1st Water TH, to 2nd Water trail to Boulder Canyon Trail to Black Mesa to TH. My map shows this to be about 11 miles. Cool cloudy morning helped, This would be better hiked in reverse because probably the best views of Weaver's Needle anywhere are on the Black Mesa trail looking North. Boulder Canyon Trail almost doesn't exist between 2nd water and the Dutchman and crosses the creek so many times that you are almost better to just rock hop down the creekbed. Just be aware of how far you are going to catch trial junctions and don't take side canyons.

Did the loop from Peralta TH On the Dutchman around Miner's needle to Bluff Springs Trail back to the TH. This is a great moderate distance day hike. Climbing to the saddle NE of Miner's Needle is the hardest portion but the rest is relatively easy going and the views around Miner's Needle are spectacular!

My brother and I hiked this in the opposite direction from Joe's description. And yes the trails are again pretty overgrown past the Bluff Springs-Terrapin intersection. We were too warm for pant legs most of the time so we just let the legs bleed, no pain, no gain huh? We climbed from the Peralta T.H. On the Bluff Springs "cardiac hill" to the Terrapin intersection and took the Terrapin up and down and up and down past the NE base of the needle and saw some great views of the Needle, Bluff Spring Mtn and the canyon. Everything was dry but the springs and the big trees still had their orange and yellow leaves. It was cool in the canyons but pretty darn warm on the ridges and in the Valleys. We had lunch at the bottom Bluff Spring Mtn. canyon in the creekbed in the sand. Then we continued on through the Marsh valley area on the Dutchman past the Cavalry trail intersection toward Charebios in La Barge Canyon. We loved this Canyon with the big Sycamore and Cottonwood trees and massive boulders, we plan to 'canyoneer' this when the creek is flowing. We found Charlebois canyon and the spring at the mouth of the canyon which had plenty of crisp cold water in many pools. It was pretty crowded there so, with no rain forcast, we camped between there and La Barge Spring in the creekbed under a bright orange Sycamore tree. We had almost enough water to get back but decided to scout La Barge Spring in the AM anyway. Like the book said it's about 200 yards NE of the Red Tanks-Dutchman intersection. We followed the creek bed in. Not as much water as Charlebois but some nice flowing leaf covered pools. A bit woodier tasting than the Charlebios water but OK! We filtered a few liters and moved on to find the Bluff Springs trail again. We also found the area around Bluff Spring to be rather beautiful also. Views all along are spectacular! Great Trip.

We used the Terrapin to loop from the Peralta T.H. to Bluff Springs to Terrapin to the Dutchman though Marsh Valley to Carlebois Spring, we camped in the large creek bed between Charlebois and La Barge Spring and went back on the Dutchman to Bluff Springs trail back to the T.H. Plenty of water at Charlebois and decent water at La Barge Spring. The trails, particularly the Terrapin, is quite overgrown and will tear you up, and your clothes... many times you have cactus on one side and nasty claw bush on the other, so you pick the bush and get chewed up. If I had the time I would come back with hedge clippers. This trail is narrow, rugged, and hilly but it does go right by the NE base of the Needle for some great views and is not well traveled like Peralta so there is some solitude. I was told by the F.S. that there was not a back country ranger this year, so I guess that's why the trails are in bad shape, but it's still the Sups, rugged, deadly, mysterious, and beautiful! We had a great trip, the leaves on all of the Cottonwood and Sycamore trees in the canyons were yellow and orange, gorgeous!

Easter Sunday hike... great temp of 75 degrees. Went in from the Badger Springs trailhead which goes down the wash of the same name to the river. There were a few day hikers and some families who just went to the river for a picnic. I saw one guy with about SIX dogs who had spent two nights, he loved it. I first went upstream about a mile, saw no one. I got to where the canyon walls are shallow and looked like a treed grassland. Nice but not what I wanted. I back tracked and went down stream a few miles. Yes lots of boulders and narrows to scramble or wade through. Beautiful... The water was muddy probably because of all the rain last week. Lots of water flowing. Great hike.
