Just wanted to get a hike in so went up the mountain a bit to escape a few degrees of heat. It was still pretty warm but it was good to get a hike in and burn a few calories.

Original plan was to hike all the way to Bigelow and spend the night before hiking back the next day but I obviously overestimated my abilities and underestimated the difficulty of this hike with all of the elevation and very poor footing. Once we reached the bottom and looked up at Bigelow it was apparent it was going to kill us if we tried to make it to the top, let alone knowing we had to do it in reverse the next day. In any case, we turned around and even the return hike's elevation gain with such a heavy pack completely kicked my butt. For the time being, need to stick with flatter hikes and find ways of seriously reducing pack weight.

Nice relatively easy hike with the wife and son before the Tucson heat really kicks in. Weather was surprisingly nice with a gentle breeze taking the edge off of what heat there was. This is a nice trail for just getting out and getting in a hike. We were attempting to follow another Route Scout route but that route appears to be invalid, hence the double-back in my route.

Did this with a buddy and our two teenage sons as a "prep" hike to get ready for some overnight backpacking adventures; hence the reason for a heavy pack on a day trail. This was an eye opener for me for sure and confirmed just how far removed I am from my time in the Marine Corps in my early twenties. The climb out at the end humbled me and made me realize that copious amounts of beer and whiskey is probably not the best diet for backpacking success.

In any case, the hike was a success and the area is beautiful and unique. Most importantly, we accomplished our goal of figuring out the best way to configure our packs and what gear was working and what we should replace. The old hiking boots I had performed absolutely horribly and thankfully I had some moleskin to temper the huge blister that began to form on my left heel. Those boots have already been replaced with a great pair of Oboz that seem to fit 100 times better and provide great support and traction.

Hopefully this will be the first trip report of many to come.
