Looking for a good run and to bag another of the Phoenix area's peaks I decided Thompson Peak was a good place to spend Thanksgiving morning.

The entire 'trail' is on a dirt road to the radio towers. Some of the steepest sections near the top are cement. The actual peak is inside the fence around the radio towers and equipment but that doesn't spoil the views from the top.

The trail is marked as 4.1mi one way and there is a vista trail at the top for another .5 one way making the total trip 4.6mi each way or a total of 9.2miles.

The weather was 23C at the start at 7:30am after a rainstorm

All of the trail is runable. I ran only about 1/2 of the distance up and ran the entire way back down for a total of just over 2 hours.

There is water at the trail-head but none on the trail.

Beautiful views in all directions from the top. The peak is 7,185 feet.

Total driving distance from Mesa is 130 miles each way. It was well worth the time in the car to get out of the 44C heat of Phoenix, even if just for a few hours!

Let me start by saying I'm not a hiker but a trail runner and this is my first triplog on HAZ. This trail is one of my standards. It's the trail I run when I'm training because it has a good mix of fast flat sections and some climbs. There are a lot of variations to the trail which can increase the distance and/or difficulty.

Most of the trail has very good footing with a few rocky sections on the North and East sides of the loop.

If you're careful you can often see Tarantulas and Rattle snakes along the trail (only if you go early before the other hikers scare them from the trail).

definately one of my favorite trails and it's very close. With a Maricopa county parks permit ($75.00/year) there's no fee. Plenty of parking and water at the trail head.

I did this hike for the second time in May 2006. Headed from S to N on Friday starting on Friday morning around 6am. 9 1/2 hour later I hit the top of the N rim, drank a beer and headed to the cabin.

Saturday I went to Zion for some light hiking and rest before headding back N to S through the canyon.

Sunday I ran from the N rim to the river then hiked up the Bright Angel trail to the top. Just over 7 hours to cross N to S - much less elevation gain this direction.

I hope to do RtRtR in 24 hours in 2007.

I've done all the trails within Usery park at one time or another. Linking them together is a great way to make up any distance you want to run/hike/bike.

This is a wonderful training run for anyone doing serious distance training. I start at the Pima Canyon parking lot water is available there. And run the trail to the Telegraph-Pass Trailhead where there's water for the return trip. If you wish you can return via the Desert classic trail. The distance is about the same.

There are some portions where the trail is very rocky for going fast but the entire trip can be run - you'll want some trail runners with some under-foot protection.

Not a great run in the summer but that still leaves six or eight months to enjoy this trail!

I did this trail as part of the Pemberton 50k (two laps for a total of 31 miles). The trail is great for running with very little of it that's rocky. I've run this loop both clockwise and counter-clockwise and prefer the clockwise direction. This trail is also good for mt. biking so you may have to contend with some traffic. The bikers don't normally come out until later in the day.

This is also a good night run if you've got a good light.
