It took me for ever to edit out which pics to download because there were just to many incredible shots! This is an awesome adventure!
The drive took close to three hours. I strongly recommend a vehicle with high clearance and good off road tires, and a good spare tire. The drive is not to technical but gets pretty rough and rocky. We had a blow out.
You eventually reach a sign that says "road closed" this is where you pull off. The hike is only three miles round trip, but it is a challenging three miles. The canyon is very lush and green. I would love to see it in the spring, or even better, in the fall.
You basically follow the spring up the canyon and sometimes you'll see a trail. The tallest wall you see up ahead on the right is where the cliff dwellings are. When you get to the base of that cliff you start a steep ascent up a couple hundred feet to the ruins. Don't start ascending to early, there are misleading trails that take you on a dangerously steep climb. I learned that the hard way.
About halfway up the ascent you'll notice a cave off to you're left, this is an adventure all on its own. I'll tell about that in a minute.
The ruins are in amazingly great condition. Some rooms appear to have been three stories high. All over the walls there are finger imprints from the indians who built these cliff dwellings. The doorways are very small and the workmanship incredible. We ate lunch in the ruins to escape the heat, yes its even hot here in January. Not bad though. I actually had a sweater to start the hike.
On our way down we decided to check out the cave. If you are good with sense of direction and not claustrophobic, I recommend at least going in a little ways to take a look. Yes you will need a flash light. There were flies in the entrance but they didn't go back far.
For the first little while you can actually walk but the further you go back, the tighter it gets. The cave has many forks but we discovered most come to an abrupt end or get uncomfortably tight. Still if you plan going back far I recommend head lamps and a long roll of string so you can find your way out. You will also want gloves and knee and elbow pads.
If you take a right at the first fork, the cave soon ends. Off to the left it goes on a ways. After a while you are on you hands and knees and soon you'll be doing a military crawl. Every once in a while there is a tight squeeze but it usually opens up some. There were some area's way back in there where I had to breathe out to squeeze through.
Deep into the cave we found a strange species of Cricket. I have a picture of him on this site. Much of the exploring in this cave requires agility and flexibility and long distances crawled in a half push-up position. I don't recomend it for anyone with even slight claustrophobia, but if you don't mind tight squeezes and small places, this is an awesome exploration.
PLEASE BE careful!! Don't get in over your head.
The hike back to the car is much quicker and easier than the hike up. The canyon is amazing and there are many other ruins and caves in the area. I recommend leaving a full day open for this one.

I origionaly wanted to hike pumphouse lower but hit the wrong trail. I didn't bring the directions, assuming it would be obvious where the trail went :? . There was about 5 different trails at the trail head. We hiked down into the canyon and then turned the wrong way. Remember to cut back under the bridge when you get into the canyon for pumphouse. If I would have read that one piece of information I think it would have been easy to find. Hukabay trail was beautiful and scenic for a short while, then it climbed back out of the canyon and back over the hills to another parking lot. There was one nice view up there a short distance into the walk where you could see the city and the canyon with its yellow leaves. After that though, it wasn't the greatest. Not worth a drive from the valley. Once we realized this was the wrong trail we headed back into the canyon for lunch and went on to bell rock, which made the trip to Sedona well worth it.

This was pretty much just a playground for big kids  . I was here with a group of friends. We had just finished one hike and were on our way out of town and decided to stop here. I am gad we did. As soon as you approach the rock, the gradual ascent up the rock begins. Something about the slope you are climbing and the way your shoes grip the sandstone, makes you feel like Spiderman. We all raced to the top like a bunch of kids on a new playground toy. About 3/4 the way up you realize this is a big toy and running all the way up on all fours with out stoping to catch your breath, probably isn't going to happen. We made pretty close to the very top, to the point where climbing gear would be the way to go. The view from where we were was absolutely amazing! I don't know that I would drive all the way to Sedona just for this, but if your ever there, check it out!

I took a couple friends up and we did some exploring. We only hiked to the "X" (see Joe's map). The view is very rewarding. There really is no trail, I recommend long pants for sure! This is a great hike if your looking for a short summit with a great view. The landscape here is also incredible! The first little incline is all yellow rolling rock surface. I felt like a kid on a huge playground :) The climb is a little technical, (requires using all four limbs) but really not to bad. Overall, the short hike to awesome scenery ratio makes this a great hike.

Awesome! I took a large group on this one this morning. The weather was great, a little hazy but that made for some cool clouds on top. We got up in about 1.5 hours and down in about 45 min. We had 11 people and all but one made it to the summit, and she came prety close. When standing on the saddle looking up the peak it is very intimidating and looks near impossible, but once your in it, you find its not so bad. It is a challenge and is more technical than most hikes around here, but it can be done and is well worth it.
When we were sitting on the summita few clouds blew right into us. It was so cool seeing how fast they move and you could even smell and taste the moisure in the cloud, very interesting. We logged in as the "Sure Footed Mule Squad". A few of us ran the distance back to the vehicles, all but the rock slide area of course, we got from the saddle to the car in 15-20 min. This is a very rewarding hike, not only the summit, but the trail right now in the fall is wonderful.

One of my Favorites. Very intense. I invited a large group, only seven made it to the top. As soon as we came onto the flatiron it started poring rain. First rain in a long time. You can't be the smell of a long needed desert rain. We hid in the crevice of a rock on the point and watched the rain blow across the valley. Amazing view! My stinkin camera broke last month and I haven't got a new one yet. I sure missed it up there. We visited the summit and hid under one of the rocks to eat brunch and wait for the rain to settle. The weather was perfect and the hike was perfect as usual.

We hiked in from the top because we like the scenery a bit more on this trail rather than the flume road. We jogged most of the way in, fun trail, and played for a few hours in the pools, had lunch, and hiked out the same day. This has always been one of my favorites. The only reason I rate this one a 4 is because of the crowds and trash they leave. It is always green, and the fresh spring water is exelent. The water is close to the same temp all year and make for a very refreshing swim. If the hike is done in the summer months it can be very hot and I strongly recomend sun screen.
This place makes for some memorable camping trips also. One of my favorite memories is in early spring, waking up early, going to one of the steaming fresh springs surrounded by raspberry bushes, and dunking my head for a refreshing drink and invigorating wake up. Onother favorite memory is sitting at the base of the dam at the crack of dawn, and listening to the water fall.Other favorite memories include being a little crazy with cliff jumping and playing on the rope swings :D
If you are planning a trip here I recomend; 1- go on a week day or some other day when it wont be to crowded, 2-The water is very clear, unless it has rained recently, so if you like to snorkel bring your mask, and 3- Do it soon, there are rumors from reliable sources that many changes will soon be made here including banning overnight camping.
