Santo Domingo was the first layman to dedicate his life to the Camino de Santiago, considering himself the Saint of Charity and Liberator of Captives. He dedicated his life to pilgrims and for them he built four great construction projects: a bridge; a hospital or pilgrims' hostel; he laid out the Camino de Santiago through the area and later the one in Castile; and a temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
