A lovely sunrise greeted us from the starboard side of Victory 1 as we made our way on the South Canal of the St Mary's River, MacArthur Lock. Poe Lock, the larger lock, is to the other side (port).
The MacArthur Lock is a key part of the Soo Locks system in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a vital waterway connecting the Great Lakes, allowing smaller vessels (up to 730 ft) to traverse the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, famous for its role in shipping crucial materials like iron ore and grain. Built in 1943 and named after General Douglas MacArthur. A new larger lock is being installed nearby.
