Top is looking at one half of the gate that will close behind us and the bottom photo is a selfie I took of the closed gates as we were dropping lower and lower for a total of 21 feet in about 10 minutes.

The Soo Locks feature a gravity-powered system with massive gates and chambers that lift/lower ships 21 feet between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Gravity-Fed System: No pumps; water fills or drains chambers by opening valves, using water pressure to raise or lower vessels.
Two Canals & Four Locks: Includes the large Poe Lock (for 1,000-foot ships) and the smaller MacArthur Lock, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Elevation Change: Lifts or lowers ships 21 feet to bypass the St. Marys River rapids.
