MV James R. Barker, a large bulk carrier ship, passing through the Soo Locks in Michigan. The ship is a 1,004-foot (306 m) long American bulk carrier that operates on the Great Lakes.

It was built in 1976 and was the first "1000-footer" built entirely on the Great Lakes.
Water Level Adjustment: The actual time it takes to raise or lower the water level by 21 feet is around 10-20 minutes, using gravity and requiring about 22 million gallons of water.
MacArthur Lock is smaller (800 ft) than the Poe Lock (1200 ft), but both operate on similar principles.

These Locks are known as the "Linchpin of the Great Lakes" because they are vital infrastructure for American steel production, agriculture, energy, and trade. An unexpected shutdown of the Poe Lock for six months would cost the U.S. economy over $1 trillion.

Direction: It's often quicker if a boat is coming in the opposite direction, as it already sets the water level in your favor.
