The day after our hike of the Crater. Here we are at Punulu'u. We got to stay at a fabulous location. The house needs quite a bit of work though; but it was adequate for our one nite stay. I mean, who can complain about the view!
We probably walked right by this house in 2022. I told Jaelyn I thot we were here (Connie, Mia and me). [ photo ] AND, when we were here in 2022 we got to see the turtles: [ photo ] .
Top photo is the beach we walked, the pond on the left. Punalu'u Beach is one of only a handful of sandy black beaches on the Big Island of Hawai'i (others are rockier). Since the currents at Punalu'u Beach are strong enough to crush the volcanic rocks, this also means that the swimming conditions are not optimal here.
Legend has it that in the time of drought, the ancient Hawaiians living in the area would dive underwater with a jug to get their fresh water. In the Hawaiian language puna luʻu means "spring [water] diver for".
