Near the south end of Death Valley National Park's Last Chance Range, resides "Ubehebe Peak", the highest summit at 5678 feet towering over the west side of the Racetrack Playa.

This strenuous hike up an old miners trail, with some off trail cairn/cross-country route finding the last .75 mile distance to the peak with a 45% slope, offers spectacular views of the Racetrack Playa to the east and the deep basin Saline Valley to the west (half a mile lower than the Racetrack Playa) with sweeping views of distant mountain ranges north-south-east-west.

Joe mentioned in his triplog that if he could rate this hike a six, he would. I believe if we could have rated it a six, we would have rated it a seven. It was truly one of our ten most enjoyable "highlights" during our seven day visit to DVNP.

This day hike is truly a "must do" when visiting this area of Death Valley IF you enjoy serious hiking, breathtaking views for pics, and desert peak-bagging! Little can prepare you for the views when you top the divide (1.9mls in at 4900ft) and first look down the other side at Saline Valley dwarfed by the two-mile high wall of the north to south Inyo Mountain Range.. :y:
