For some the highlight of this hike will be the Ashford Mining Camp, located in a scenic and remote canyon at a relatively low elevation of 2250 feet. On this full day in DVNP, I believe that Joe and I more enjoyed the scenic views and colorful geology of this canyon loop hike to and from. The camp and surrounding mines provide an interesting glimpse of life in a remote gold mine camp occupied by the Ashford brothers from 1907-1915.
Various interests worked over 4000 feet of tunnels off and on until the early 1950's when the property was finally idle for good. Harold Ashford estimated that the total production of gold ore from 1907-1950's had sold for $135,000 about half as much as was invested.
For the first time ever in the wild, I actually found some "real gold" embedded-in quartz rock while hiking in this lower canyon segment http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=126268 A very special moment for me On our hike out, my second best moment was finding an old historic genuine "Prince Albert" tobacco container.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=126292 |
