I forgot my sandals, which would have been nice at the creek crossing, but managed to keep my balance across the slippery rocks- despite the added pressure of the audience- a family of 4 relaxing by the water. The trail is pretty easy to pick up, and the hike upward begins. Beware if you have weak ankles, several sections of trail have loose rock that turns underfoot at every given chance. The views on this hike are beautiful, especially once you get to the top of the mesa and can see Sycamore Canyon and the San Francisco Peaks. Several cows were none too pleased to have a hiker in their midst, there was much mooing and crashing through the junipers to get away. Once you get to the tank, the best way is to head left and stay on the smaller dirt trails- they are pretty easy to pick up. I went the wrong way but still managed to find the trail leading to the base of the cliff-then it was easy to follow the trail up and around to the ruins. They are in great condition, and the view facing outward is breathtaking. The hike back was uneventful until the creek, where I lost a trekking pole, but managed to keep upright. |
