I actually really enjoyed this hike. While I concede that it IS hiking up a road, there were many things I liked:

1) Solitude
2) Looking down into volcanos and lava flow
3) Temps that feel like late November should (for us non-natives ;) ) 30 degrees at the TH
4) Sweet panoramic views of the SF peaks, Sunset Crater, Flag, and the Painted Desert
5) Fire tower- I don't know why, but it always makes it seem like more of an anventure to get to climb those stairs at the end

Only a light dusting of snow on the peaks, the trail up is clear. Went to the East and West summits- west is a workout, scrambling up a steep (though thankfully short) slope of loose scree. East holds the lookout tower, unmanned at this time of year, but great views in all directions.
