This was a somewhat abbreviated hike as I had my ten year old canine friend, Blitz, with me and she is no longer the hiker that I imagine her to have been one day. We never actually made it to Hackberry Spring although this was more due to my poor leadership that Blitz's exhaustion. We started from the horse lot at around 8:50AM, a little late due to both the US60 and the 101 loop being closed, and headed at a gradual downward slope into the canyons. It was probably close to 90 degrees at this point and while Blitz was not having trouble with the terrain she was clearly in need of water and shade for rest. We made it about thirty-five minutes deep without straying from the main trail when, after three stops to fill Blitz's collapsible water bowl, that we should turn back before the day could burn us any more. The trip had taken us down less than 150 total feet probably and was a generally flat grade passing through various washes along the way. On the return hike, we met an older couple who told me that I had in fact missed the turn-off for the Hackberry Spring. I spotted the marker for this trail split (it is a large, wooden post, 4+ feet tall, hammered into the ground) and is placed at the head of the split to the left. The total round trip to as far as we ventured took no more than 75 minutes and included five stops for water.
