My first time up around Payson. This is an excellent hike! I went with Andrey and we had a blast. The temperature was just right even in the blazing sun. Most of the hike is shaded by pine trees but the areas where you're exposed, you're almost 7,000' so it's cool. We saw loads of recent Elk traces and tracks (I was really hoping to see the King of the Forest.) The upper road was closed (probably due to trees blown down over the road) so we went from the lower trail head. This is actually a good place to start. We went counter clockwise and this is the direction I would recommend. It's steep but not too steep in the beginning but once you get up on the rim it's mostly flat. The only issue is at between around mile 3 and 6 on the hike on the top of the rim. If you want to stay near the rim, the trail is indistinct and there are a lot of fallen pine trees from wind storms. There are small patches of catclaw but it's easily negotiated. There's a little bit of a steep downhill section on the NW end but it's pretty much an easy grade coming back. Just in and out of draws and ridges on a pretty flat trail till you're back to the trail head.
