1st trip
wanted at least one day up north this holiday weekend
angela came up with gpsjoe's rim loop as a possibility
met up in fountain hills and in no time were at the 260 trailhead
up military sinkhole and a visit to the overlook at the top
we modified joe's loop a bit by continuing on sinkhole to general crook
walked a couple of miles through the forest heading west, paralleling a fire road, past the woods canyon lake crossing road
came out on the rim at mogollon campground, where we found the rim lakes vista trail and then continued off trail near the rim
found a nice lunch spot on the edge with great views, somewhat out of a gusting wind
stumbled onto a cairned route along the rim; must have been an old road at one time
easy travel - i don't remember any of the triplogs mentioning this route
came upon a beautiful aspen grove
saw santa working on his tan
our path intersected forest road 9350 which led into a nice campground
drew trailhead was toward the west end of the campground
this trail was much steeper than sinkhole, with a couple of rocky sections
good views through the trees
after only a mile, found the highline trail
this was more exposed, but still decent shade at times
some ups and downs, and hard to watch footing and gawk at the same time
tons of lupine along this trail
angela will have plenty of pictures to share ;)
with about a mile or so to go, we flushed a young elk, which ran across the path right in front of me, heading downhill
all i could do was stand and watch it crash through the brush at full gallop
didn't even attempt to reach for my camera
we asked ourselves a few times if that really happened
we both started getting hungry about this time and soon enough hit the 260 trailhead
angela brought post hike beverages for both of us, then we drove down to payson for some mexican food at el rancho - another great choice!
really enjoyed the day
lots of variety in trails, terrain, views and vegetation
good weather and high clouds much of the day
the part up on the rim was beautiful and relaxing
a little bit of route finding, one good climb, a steep descent, and nice woods
we commented that the only thing missing was water, otherwise perfect
i used to spend quite a bit of time in this area, but haven't been up here recently
fun to do a familiar trail (sinkhole and part of general crook) and some new ones
now i want to do more of highine - i've only done a little section near horton creek
always enjoy angela's company and our schedules don't mesh very often
thanks for putting this one together, angela, and for driving
very nice day :)
