Looped Amethyst Trail to 4, 3, 2, 1 and back down over Brown's Saddle. Made good time up to 4 without any problems. 4 to 3 was pretty straightforward as well, found a good route. 3 to 2 is where the troubles really began. Kept trying to climb up 2 too early and hitting steep drops and gulleys with the small peaks in between the peaks (this is really something no one has really mentioned -- those multiple smaller false peaks in between the main four). Follow the east side of 2 and there will basically be a trail that will take you around and up. You'll feel as though you're going all the way around the peak but wait it out and keep going. Looks like it goes up shortly after you pass an evergreen on that side. 2 to 1 was also a slight challenge, as it was about to get dark and we still had not gone up yet. The traverse is fairly straightforward, but there is a path up 1 off to the east of this peak. Honestly I think the scariest part of the whole thing was coming down Brown's Chute. Darkness fell as we were heading down this, but the extensive amounts of scree added to the steep downclimbs made this a very harrowing task, among other reasons. This one part was really the least enjoyable, but I loved the challenge of the rest of the route. The climbing and exposure for the rest of the route (although very, very serious and real) did not present a problem for me in terms of fear or skill. When we reached the saddle, some very friendly campers invited us to their fire, gave us water, and supplied us each with a well-deserved swig of Jameson.
I believe the temps were high 70's to low 80's.. temps were okay for this trip, but if it was much hotter (probably around 85+) it would probably be too hot to do this comfortably. These temps were okay because we were not moving at a fast rate; most of our energy was exerted during climbing. |
