| no partners | | It was a walk in the clouds at the height of monsoon season, and everything was wet. After an enjoyable exploration of Bear Trail Creek (the name comes from a biological publication from the 1980's), I arrived at the end of the ridge above Crazy Horse Falls, and was greeted with a sea of clouds where a view of the desert, thousands of feet below, should be. It was an eerie feeling. Thunder rumbled somewhere in the clouds above me. I hastily retreated from the ridge, and decided to hike down Crazy Horse Creek to the edge of the falls. It was rough going, climbing over scattered logs and trying to keep my footing on the muddy canyonside. I ended up sloshing down the creek bed itself, which was going full blast with monsoon runoff. I witnessed the falls at my feet, then began my return hike, as sunset was 30 minutes away. Back in Bear Trail Creek, I planned to follow the old logging road back to the Graham Ridge #507 road. A few hundred yards later, I was tangled in aspen thickets and deadfall. Screw it, time to go cross country. I made it back to the Swift Trail after dark, and happily changed into dry clothes at my truck.
This adventure had begun with the discovery of the ancient logging road on Google satellite photos, and the desire to visit Crazy Horse Creek and its potential waterfall location. Learning the location of a supposed cienega I hadn't known about until recently pushed this hike/exploration to the front of my Pinaleno to-do list. I ended up soaking wet, bleeding, muddy, and with pulled muscles in my thigh, but it was worth it. I plan to return on a cloudless day to enjoy the views I'm sure exist from the ridge and the falls.
