| partners | | My brother Ryan and I wanted to go up Humphreys. This would be his first time. We leave Prescott at 6 am on the last day of our Prescott trip, and start our hike at Snowbowl at 8:30. We reach the saddle a couple of hours later, and are disappointed to see thunderstorms growing quickly near the summit. "I guess we won't be summiting today", I said. We decide to go up the ridge a bit, and at least hit 12,000 feet before turning around. As we climb up the ridge, a steady wind picks up, and blows the gathering storms away. "I think we can keep going." The wind remains constant, and we make the summit, along with several others who had been nervously eyeing the skies. Photos are taken, the register signed, and a SPOT is sent. A dark cloud approaches, so Ryan and I begin our descent. We eat lunch at the saddle, then return to Snowbowl.
No one else in our group had wanted to ride the Agassiz Lift at Snowbowl after our Kachina Trail hike 2 days earlier, so Ryan and I concluded our adventure with a ride on it. Ten minutes up, it begins to rain. Somewhere on the peaks, a blast of thunder is heard. "Uh, I hope the lift is grounded!" Lift operator Dax Shepard speeds the lift up for the return trip after we leave the top, and we are soon below treeline again. Thankfully, the storm quickly passes, and we can enjoy the rest of the ride.
Following a trip to Haistings, an exchange at REI, and dropping Ryan off at his house in Tempe, I arrive home in Safford at 1:30 am, and am in bed by 3. Gotta be at work at 8 am, but the exhaustion is worth it! |
