I can tell that the nights are getting longer, because when my alarm went off at 5 am, it was still dark out. Dark out and overcast, but no thunder or lightning anywhere. I pulled into the trailhead, and there were only two other cars there, even though the weather was perfect for hiking. I was happy to not have to rush up to the pools to beat the heat and I took my time, enjoying the scenery. There were some sprinkles and I could see storms to the west and a faint double rainbow on Pusch Ridge. The mountains are wearing a soft-looking coat of shades of green dotted with wildflowers, making the exposed rocky boulders of the Romero Trail even more attractive. The water was flowing harder than on my visit 10 days ago and there was a tremendous sound of rushing water. There was no one else at the pools, and it was a little too cold yet at 8am to go for a float, so I took a nap above the pools (because it would suck to wake up to being swept away in a flash flood :) )

When I woke up, it was warm enough to take the floatie out, but the water was pretty cold, and so I didn't stay in for long. Other than the person I passed on the way up, I hadn't seen anyone all day. I marveled at the novelty of having goosebumps in August. I packed up and instead of heading back, decided to take advantage of the still-nice temperatures to hike upstream for a while. I called Mr. Sirena to let him know the change in my plans. As I meandered along, I saw more inviting pools and waterfalls and checked out some campsites that I'd like to come back to sometime. At 11:00 I was back at Romero Pools, and it was still gorgeous out. The overcast skies made it fun to take lots of macro shots of the flora and fauna.

On my way back, I passed only two women on the trail, and we all couldn't believe that it was so cool out in the middle of the day. The skies darkened and it started to rain just as I reached the turnoff for the Birding Loop, so I figured I'd take the small loop and walk in the rain. Besides, how often do you get to have a comfortable hike at noon in August? I also wanted to check out where the trail takes off for Buster Mountain. (Which is looking way green right now!) I saw a deer and many more wildflowers on the loop, and the heavy rain didn't start until I got to my car. What an enjoyable hike!
