At Tram stop #9, we took the trail leading down to the creekbed and hiked up the creek for about a half-mile or so until we came to Jammed Log Pool a little after 7am. There is a giant log that was caught upright between 2 boulders during a flash flood, hence the name. The log itself is about 15 feet above the creek- must have been some storm! Bill and Mitch were disappointed by the amount of water and algae in Jammed Log Pool, but I went exploring downstream to the next pool and it ended up being a great swimming hole. The views in this part of Sabino are really beautiful, lots of gigantic boulders and plenty of shade. I will have to come back when I have more time and spend the day. We went for a swim and stopped to eat some snacks. I shared some of my homemade dehydrated saguaro fruit, strawberries, and yogurt. We headed back at 8, just as the sun reached into the bottom of the canyon. The hike out was warm, but nothing like the inferno that I hiked in yesterday. There were plenty of pools left in Sabino to wet ourselves down on the way. Tons of blooming agave, tall yellow primrose, and the saguaros are bursting with fruit. I found a low saguaro to pick a fruit so that Bill and Mitch could taste. We made plans to come back to Jammed Log Pool later in the season, when there will be more water. |
