The junction of the Spencer Trail and the River Trail has a sign. I didn't notice that there were three trails here not two. I started out on what I thought was the Spencer Trail . After about 1/8th mile I was thinking, "Wow if the whole climb is like this, this is going to be tough". I topped out on a little scramble and found myself on a nice singletrack trail. So I backtracked to the start of the Spencer trail and started off again. This is why there's a little loop in my GPS route. Trail hint (not political commentary) - stay way left. The trail is well engineered and constructed. And I had it to myself. This is a lot like Squaw Peak in Phoenix was like 40 years ago. Rock stairs in some places and nice switchbacks & traverses. About 2/3rds of the way up is a little stretch with some exposure. The tread is about 9" against the wall with a couple hundred foot dropoff. Past this stretch, the trail becomes much sandier. Not bad on the way up, but the sand makes footing a little dicey on the way down so you have to go a little slower than otherwise. The trail never became overly steep and then you hit a nice plateau at the top. You can see Page and Horseshoe Bend in the distance. A lot of territory up here to explore if you have the time. This area could be brutal in the heat. This is a fun area with the history and the river. The Lonely Dell Ranch on the Paria River is worth a little side-excursion. |
