| partners | | Wonderful day for a fitness hike for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that I am not as fit as I would like to be. The holidays were not kind to my waistline.
It was harder than I'd hoped it would be this time, I bonked pretty hard after the lunch break on the ridge. Part of it was my bum ankle, but only a part. A bigger part was probably the fact that this was the first tough hike for me since mid-November.
The trail is in wonderful shape, though all the recent maintenance did nothing to make it less steep, or the return trip less eternal. We found water in a number of spots along the creek, in some places there was even measurable flow, only just barely. There are a lot of spots where I'd love to return with my hammock...tucked along the creek, listening to the wind in the oaks. There were patches of snow and ice on the north slope, particularly behind the rock wall that creates the Window. The most amazing thing was that there was no wind in the Window at all. It was actually a warm, sunny, happy spot!
We barely saw anyone on the trail with us, just a couple of lone hikers, a couple of backpackers (who sound like they froze up on the ridge overnight) and a few tourists at the trailhead. One of the tourists asked about our hike, and after I described it, he seemed taken aback and said "You two are tough". Indeed we are, my friend, indeed we are.
We were back in town and in the shower before dinner time. Perfect day. Now if only I could do this like 300 more times... |
