The footing, while loose at points, is better than some other spots in the front range of the Catalinas (Finger Rock I'm looking at you). And perhaps because I had prepared myself for a murderously steep and long last mile to the window, I was pleasantly surprised to find it relatively level with only a few, short, steep areas. I think there are definitely longer, harder, and more severe grades earlier in the hike.
And definitely take the advice to hike just a bit beyond the Window. We didn't go all the way to the spires/rocky outcroppings further south, but just 100 or so feet above the Window you'll find much better views.
I was worried about sun and heat exposure (it had been over 100 that week), but we had substantial shade in the morning (a blessed minute that was cool), some wooded environs, and shelter with the canyon walls. Plus, somewhat cooler temps (high of about 93) and blustery wind once we gained some elevation. So it ended up being a really pleasant hike (though my sunscreen forgotten shoulders may have me singing a different tune tomorrow).
Within the last month or so, I've hiked to the Finger Rock Guard and Mt. Kimball (via Finger Rock trail) and I liked this hike more. Better views, more varied landscapes, seasonal pools, etc. All three are similarly challenging, but while I can see doing the others again for training, only this one would I go back to in order to enjoy the scenery. |
