After seeing Grasshopper and MNLumberjack's photosets of this hike, I was inspired to check it out myself. A cool secret hideout 3600 feet up in the Superstitions? The boy in me said, You gotta go.

First, I had to climb 1500 feet up the Carney trail. Holy cow, this is tougher than Flatiron. And I wasn't even going all the way to the top (Peak 5057). Its a steep hike that requires occasional handwork through boulder and slick rock parts.

I came across a big group of hikers (10-12 people) on the way up to the saddle. They were heading up to the Peak and planned to continue down the Ridgeline to Flatiron. When we reached the saddle they continued on to the Northwest while I took the Northeast trail towards the Roost.

The trail started out well-cairned, but at one point I reached the drainage and wasn't sure which direction to go. I followed some cairns up a ridge to my north, but this didn't seem right. I was supposed to follow that drainage. So, back down the ridge I go where I regained the trail. But, then it happened again. Cairns lead me up that darn north ridge again at any area where the drainage starts to split. I should have stayed on the right drainage but was being led up the left. I began my correction, but realized I must have added a good 1/4 mile plus some bushwhacking to my trip.

Back on track, and now I'm heading towards the spires near the cliff's edge. Cairns would appear then disappear, but I ultimately found myself at a big cairn that seemed quite important. I looked down to my left and spotted what appeared to be the Roost. But, how to get down? I glanced at the hole to my right which dropped vertically down a 10 foot chute to sloped ground below. Could that be the way? I examined a couple other angles, then realized, yep, that's the way. I dropped my pack at the top of the hole and began stemming my way down into the "cave". A few good holds for my feet and hands and soon I was standing on a steep angled chute inside of a slot that led right into the Roost.

As expected, this is a cool little hideout. I enjoyed the Roost area for about 20-30 minutes and then moved on down the trail making my way back the same way I came.

Of course, I somehow screwed up again and ended up too high on the ridge south of the drainage. Lost the cairns again. Not to worry though, I just kept moving forward and soon found the trail (plus a few catclaw scratches) that led back to the Carney trail.

Showed up back at my vehicle just under 4 hours after I started to cap a cool little morning adventure.
