| no partners | | Went up by Strawberry yesterday with my Buddy to do the Fossil Springs hike that is in the Book "100 Hikes Arizona". The book suggest taking the Flume Trail to check out the Historical Water Flume built in 1916 and the Dam that feeds it. Upon arrival I was just amazed at the color of the water in the Creek due to all the minerals. It was awesome. Anyway we took off our shoes and crossed the river and set out toward the described trail. Once up the hill on the other side we started trecking down the Old Flume Road. The destination is Fossil Springs and the weather was nice and warm. Once we came around the corner we were expecting to see this Flume however it was not there. For a short distance it drew questions in my head if we had gone the right way. How could this be? Shortly thereafter we came accross some remenants of what would have been supports for the Flume. Theh more we looked the more we realized that there was no more Flume. (Bummer, I really wanted to see this thing in action). The trail was still very enjoyable and we saw 3 deer, 6 javalinas, and a snake. The waterfall at the other end where the former dam was is sooooo cool! A little further on down and we found the springs themselves. We returned the way we came. Great Hike that I am looking forward to doing again!
I looked up the removal and APS took it out between 2005 and 2009 to return the springs/creek to its natural state. I can understand and appreciate this but wow what a cool piece of history that thing must have been to see. |
