| partners | | We camped about ~5 miles from the TH at a BEAUTIFUL campsite with an amazing view. We saw several other (empty) campsites along this road and would totally camp there again.
The road they had us going in was a bit rough (but there could be a different way I’m not aware of). This one felt like it was in the middle of nowhere and I was loving the solitude! We did need to use 4x4 the way we came in and I only recall seeing other 4x4 vehicles on the road and/or trailhead.
You hike above the slot canyon for around a mile before it just drops right into a wash. Easiest approach ever! I realized halfway through the slot that my recording was completely frozen so I’m not sure if it recorded the entirety although it was not a very lengthy hike. We entered the slot and realized right away that it was very muddy! I was determined to continue despite the mud as the slot was stunning. There were some very tricky {for me at least!} obstacles in this one. There were some {non technical} downclimbs that were very challenging given the amount of mud. On one downclimb, I messed up my landing and sank up above my ankle in nasty mud. I honestly wanted to turn around at that point but decided to embrace the mud and just go for it. Note: if you continue through the canyon while it’s muddy you will likely need a change of clothes/shoes. There were sections I needed to scoot down muddy logs on my bum and I was just completely covered in mud. If someone didn’t know that I was in a muddy slot canyon, they’d definitely think I had an accident
There was quite a bunch of SNOW inside the slot which was a nice treat to see (also helpful with mud removal). The canyon walls were very high and it was just really beautiful. I loved this slot despite the mud and would definitely return! I would guess it would take much less time in there if it wasn’t so muddy! The final obstacle was a muddy sheer nightmare and I happily passed on that one while James tackled it. He is a beast at this stuff, but he did take a scary fall getting back up. (I would not recommend this final obstacle especially if it’s muddy as it was dangerously slippery- thankfully he was just a bit scraped up, but it could have been worse.)
You exit the same way you came in and this was the first of the people we saw. It was a family and one person was wearing plaid pajama pants, so I’m not sure how far they made it in there. We pulled down a side road so I could change clothing & shoes after we were finished. It was such a cool experience in there and I’ve definitely caught the slot bug! |
