I actually did the Pumpkin-Bull Basin Traverse, and so I added another 100 feet to the elevation gain for the basin connecting trail. It was really windy today, but pretty nice for 10,400' given that wind. The sign at the junction of the Pumpkin and Bull Basin connecting trail was twisted to the side and I didn't pay much attention to the details of the trails. By the time I realized I was on the connector, I just decided to go with it. I am glad I did, even though the Bull Basin trail is suffering from heavy blow down. The typical trees on the north side are there, but so too are a lot of live trees up high, probably from the winter ice storm in December. There is also a lot snow around up there, complicating travel once the spruce zone is entered.

With all the snow melt on Kendrick, the upper reaches of the Bull Basin trail crosses a bog of sorts, complete with what looked like sphagnum moss. Travel is very slow in that area, due to both big snow drifts and down material. The Pumpkin trail has some down material on the upper stretches as well, but nothing like the Bull Basin. Still, a good hike. I enjoyed it a lot considering trail conditions, probably because I wasn't planning on making this my Mount Elden trail and I just enjoyed slowly crossing the mountain. Driving in from the paved road you cross what is probably some of the best looking young ponderosa pine forest around. Still dense, but reasonably well managed.

Fed by snow melt, she's flowing well, as is a lower spring the trail crosses around 8100'.
