| no partners | | My friend and I are preparing a crew of 6 Boy Scouts for Philmont Scout Ranch and figured this would be a good hike to get a little altitude training. We started at the Pumpkin Trailhead after a quick sack lunch at about noon. There was a lot of barren landscape from the pumpkin center fire. We saw an cow elk about half way up the trail. Nobody was at the tower but we spent a little time on the helicopter pad taking in the scenery. We found a nice campsite on the other side of the hill just before the old cabin. The wind blow through the trees all night and at one point there was some thunder and lightning in the distance but no precipitation at our location. We made it back done the other side on the Kendrick trail in 2 hours flat. We only took one vehicle so we started the 5 mile walk on the road to the Pumpkin Trailhead. We had the fortune of catching a ride from a couple of very kind hikers who were preparing for a trek at the foot of the Kimalayas (that had already done Kilimanjaro). Very enjoyable backpacking trip! |
