| partners | | Saturday was an active day on the trail. I knew there would be a large group out of Phoenix doing this, but I didn't want to start that early, so I did it on my own terms. I knew a couple of those folks so we stopped to chat when they were on their way down. There were also quite a few backpackers - there was a group of older gents preparing for a Whitney trip next week, and then there was a group of boy scouts that got a later start. To top it off, this was the day where, every six weeks, the lookout gets supplies delivered by mule, so there were six horses and seven pack mules on the trail, too!
I liked the trail overall. There was a burn section low on the trail that wasn't so visually appealing, but the trail itself was a gentle uphill almost the entire way. Sweet!
Of course, I had to talk to the lookout for a while. Gary had worked for the Forest Service in various capacities for quite a while - including working as a lookout for a number of years. He had his grandson Justin there for the weekend, too. Gary recognized my delight for the tower, and he offered to take me in on some weekend to train me. Although that sounds delightful, I'm thinking of calling the Forest Service to see if there may be a closer lookout that might do that for me. It would be cool to be a relief lookout sometime. Fun!
Great day, and a fantastic campsite awaiting me at the end. |
