| no partners | | Drove up early Saturday afternoon to look around an area that I rarely visit. In fact, I had only been all the way to the top on FS651 once, way back in the 1980s sometime. It sort of came back to me why I probably haven't been there much: between the heavy concentration of electronic gear and the summer cabins, there just isn't much room for camping and feeling like you are getting away from civilization. The high point for this range probably is the four-wheeling possibilities and hiking trails. But I just wanted to explore, take pictures and camp with no expectations, so it worked out alright. The good thing is that I was the only one in Upper Pinal Campground, and I was in unit 1, the best of the 3. There was some noise in the night from wind whipping through the electronic gear just above me on the ridge, plus partying at a cabin nearby, but nothing as obnoxious as I experienced the previous week in Madera Canyon. The funny thing was that the party folks from the nearby cabin would occasionally drive down on their quad to use the FS restroom. Must be better than theirs. The other thing that makes this area sort of undesirable is the cows roaming around. They came through camp Sunday morning before I left, but weren't a problem. All in all, it was fun to go up and check it out again. |
