This is about 300 miles from home and made the remainder of the drive the next day a snap, assuring I would get into Santa Fe at a reasonable time to get checked into my motel and make the evening event without stress. Worked perfectly.
I have a number of routes that I take whenever I drive up to the Albuquerque or Santa Fe areas, but the one I think is the most scenic is the one I did this trip. Tucson east on I-10, then through Safford and up to Mule Creek and through Glenwood, Reserve and on to Datil, before heading east to Socorro then north on I-25. I have camped at Datil Well many times and think it is just perfect. And at $5.00 per night (2.50 for geezers like me) it's a bargain! Good water, lighted restrooms, and they even provide firewood. There are a couple of miles of trails there, though I have never checked them out.
The photos included here are from the prime part of the drive, which is from Mule Creek on to Datil. After I left Santa Fe, I was thinking of camping in Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mountains Friday night the 9th, then driving up to the new observatory (Magdalena Ridge) Saturday morning and maybe doing the Crest Trail to North Baldy hike, but the weather was bad with widespread rain, so I just continued on toward Arizona instead. Stayed at a motel in Safford Friday night before heading back to Tucson Saturday morning. |
