First person I come across is an SAR guy who was out there doing training. He mentioned that there was a group of them behind on the trail that I'd come across. They must have been on the Dutchman cuz I never saw them. Though you can imagine my confusion when I did come across a fairly large group in full fatigues carrying assault rifles. Oh and to make matters worse, I realize that the big fat guy is famous Mesa NSM Nazi jerk J.T. Ready and that I also recognize another couple local Nazi freaks. Oh great... Really? Nazi's doing training exercises out of the First Water TH? Lame! When I say Nazi's, I don't mean racist Arizona rednecks. I mean Nazi's.
By the way, if they start training out here on a regular basis-- people need to understand that they are not military, police, or officially sanctioned by anyone in any way. They have no authority even though they look military.
So that really put me in a bad mood for a little while and finally it blew over as I saw the Battleship. I made my way down Boulder Canyon and headed up. There were two hikers heading up to Battleship just ahead of me. I ended up hiking with them the rest of the way. It worked out well, since I was solo and felt a little iffy about doing all that scrambling by myself and they were Battleship newbies and seemed happy to have someone give a little route guidance. Nice guys, too!
Battleship rules as always. I headed back down and parted ways with the other hikers. They headed back to Boulder Cyn and I headed down to Lower LaBarge. I figured I was out there, I might as well see one of my other favorite sites. It was also heating up and I was looking forward to dipping my hat in the cold (although a little green) water.
I hung out for a bit watching all the frogs go crazy and then headed through LaBarge. It was less of a pain than I remember. I hit Boulder Cyn Trail and headed back up Second Water. Good day! (except for the Nazi's). |
