| no partners | | So excited about doing this hike that I woke up well before the alarm, as often times happens. Set a 3 mph pace along the Dutchman, unfortunately no runoff in the creek like the last time I came through. Made it up Bull Pass saddle and then found the spur trail up, the latter a bit of a butt-kicker. Followed the trail all the way to the view point of the Needle, then took some time out to rest. Explored the mesa towards the west end, climbing over boulders looking for the hieroglyphics but didn't find them. Had an idea I would venture all the way to the west end cliffs but the going was very slow so I turned back. Now hiking down the saddle I ran into a few hikers who asked me how to get to the top, they had seen me on the summit. Upon reaching the Dutchman/Boulder Canyon junction I rested a while and pondered returning via the canyon, making a loop out of the hike. Was feeling my oats, had plenty of water left and some food, so I went for it. A little bit of running water in the canyon, pools of thick algae as expected, finally some water to hike past! Enjoyed this part of the hike a great deal, stopping to take pics quite often. Second Water was a bit of a huffer too but I knew it would level out before too long. My gps logged 16 miles, a new personal best. |
