For my birthday, Wendy and I decided on this trail that neither of us had seen yet. I love a good shuttle hike and the Catalinas are perfect for it. We left a car at La Milagrosa TH and drove up to Molino Basin to start our hike. I just can't seem to get away from the Arizona Trail these days, not that it's a bad thing. We hiked up the juniper and oak covered hillside to one of my all-time favorite views out toward Mica Mountain and that temptress, Helen's Dome.

The weather was just perfect- I never get tired of the fact that I can spend time outside on my birthday here in Tucson. Growing up in Chicago, February is one of the worst months and my birthday would usually be snowy and bitterly cold. The trail switchbacked down to the valley below. where the cottonwoods were just starting to show some green. We took a break at West Spring, there was water flowing across the trail.

We wound through the grass and junipers for a bit longer before reaching La Milagrosa Ridge turnoff. We immediately came to a series of pools and the canyon dropped away on our right. Stopped at a spot with great views for lunch and birthday cake. "The Miraculous Ridge" trail is a delight- it feels much more remote than it is. The best part of the day was coming upon Tequila Spring under a large dead cypress tree. Crazy mountain bikers. Micro Chicken was wasted and shouting obscenities so we had to get out of there.

It was a wonderful birthday hike with a great hiking partner and I would definitely do this shuttle hike again.
