| partners | | Tom & I did this as a day hike. I came up to Flagstaff Monday afternoon, left a car at the Cosnino TH and stayed at Tom's cabin for the night. We got an early start this morning from Shultz Tank which was pretty low. It a really nice area to hike in. There are fingers where the fire burned past the trail and other sections without fire damage. There were some nice views of Mt Elden and the nearby ridge. There was a really nice rolling meadow about 4.5 miles into the hike. I anticipated a lot of development between AZ89 and I-40 but there was very little. We passed a mining operation but only one building. Trains were running pretty frequently on the tracks paralleling I-40 as we neared the southern TH.
We noticed two reroutes/alternate routes which were different from the official ATA published tracks. One was between mile 1.1 and 2.0 from the south end. It takes the trail off the dirt road. I didn't get a new track because we followed the old one as we knew it led back to our car. The other is just north of the bridge 5.3 miles from the south end of the passage also taking the trail off a road.
Hiking southbound made the hike relatively easy for a 14 mile hike. There was very little climbing, with the elevation gain made gradually over the distance. The northern part was in the trees; the southern part had smaller growth but still interesting. A lot of thru-hikers probably miss this section as they hike Passage 33 for restocking, a shower, and comfortable bed in Flagstaff which is too bad. It is worth doing. |
