The plan was to hike 8 miles or so east on the Highline, then return back the same way. Once at the trailhead we both eat some bran muffins I had picked up at Fresh-n-Easy the night before, Ryan had 2 I had one. That was what doomed this hike. Although they may have looked healthy, it seems they tore us both up, big time. About a mile in my stomach was singing, and not in a good way. I kept up hope it would pass and hiked on. I wasn't aware until about at the end of our target mile point that Ryan was feeling the same way, but worse. We had lunch hoping it would help, and for me it did, but not so for Ryan, he felt worse. This is where the hike turned into a march. Since Ryan wasn't feeling good we had to take a lot of short breaks and the pace slowed, add in the heat, the fine loose trail dirt (we both wore low hikers so the dirt got into our socks which created a sandpaper action against our feet, think rubbed raw), and well it was a long return hike back to the TH. The two creeks we crossed were heaven sent. They allowed us to wet our shirts and bandanas to help cool us down and provided much needed shade. As you can guess the sight of the truck at the trailhead was a very welcomed sight. Chugging 2 liters of cold Gatorade helped a lot. When I got home I quickly added some ginger chews and some activated charcoal to the pack to be better prepared for this type condition next time. |
